After a long period of silence, Apple has just officially activated the @apple account on the social network Threads - a platform developed by Meta as an alternative to X (Twitter). Although it has not posted any content, this account immediately attracted more than 4.8 million followers, mainly thanks to the automatic follow feature from Instagram users.
The event comes quite late compared to a series of Apple subsidiary accounts such as Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Books, Shazam and Beats by Dre, all of which have joined Threads since the platform launched in mid-2023. However, the official Apple brand account has remained silent until now.
The fact that the @apple account has reached nearly 5 million followers in a short time is not surprising. On Instagram, Apple currently has more than 34 million followers. With the platform's suggested and auto-follow mechanism, the new account's rapid growth reflects the global brand power that Apple owns.
But what’s catching observers’ attention isn’t the numbers, but the broader context. While many tech companies are pulling out of X for political , media, and branding reasons, Apple still maintains a strong presence there with nearly 10 million followers.
The iPhone maker still regularly uses the X to promote products, livestream events, and push major marketing campaigns. In contrast, Apple is completely absent from alternative platforms like Mastodon, except for a personal appearance by Phil Schiller.
According to 9to5Mac , Apple's appearance on Threads may not signal an immediate change in communication strategy, but it shows that the company is expanding its coverage on social networks.
Additionally, as Meta pushes Threads as a standalone platform, Apple's move has many expecting a change in the world's most valuable tech company's approach to social networking.
Threads now has about 175 million monthly active users, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Despite its rapid initial growth, the platform is still figuring out its identity and retention mechanisms, especially with big brands like Apple.
