The baby girl was born with nine loops of umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

On December 16th, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital reported that yesterday, pregnant woman D.TML (29 years old), pregnant with her second child, was admitted to the hospital in labor at over 37 weeks.

During the cesarean section, the team led by Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology A1, discovered that the baby had nine loops of umbilical cord tightly wrapped around its neck. This was a very dangerous situation, requiring the team to quickly untangle and cut each loop of cord to save the baby.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai, who directly performed the cesarean section, shared: “Cases where the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck multiple times like this are extremely rare. It can reduce blood flow to the fetus, leading to severe malnutrition, or even fetal death at any time. Therefore, the decision to perform a cesarean section in this case was very timely and fortunate for both the mother and the baby.”

Dr. Hai also advised that pregnant women should have regular prenatal checkups or follow their doctor's appointments and seek immediate medical attention if there are any unusual signs. During labor, if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the fetus's neck, the doctor will provide advice and monitor the birth to detect any abnormalities early and handle them appropriately.

Previously, there have been many cases of babies being born with multiple loops of umbilical cord wrapped around their necks; however, a case of a baby with nine loops of umbilical cord wrapped around its neck is very rare.

For example, at Bao Son General Hospital, doctors were surprised when, during a cesarean section, a baby boy weighing 2.6 kg, son of a 36-year-old woman from Hanoi, was born safely and healthily with a "record" of 5 loops of umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and 2 loops around his body.

At Moc Chau General Hospital, a baby boy weighing 2.6 kg with six loops of umbilical cord wrapped around his neck let out his first cry. Fortunately, the umbilical cord wasn't wrapped too tightly, so the baby's skin remained pink, and he was able to cry.

At Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, doctors successfully resuscitated a 3.5 kg baby boy suffering from acute fetal distress during labor due to the umbilical cord being wrapped around his neck five times.
