Beckham's team (applause) suffered a defeat. |
At Wembley, Salford were completely outplayed by their more energetic and sharper opponents. In the VIP stands, Beckham, along with Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt, could only watch helplessly as their team crumbled under the explosive performance of Jodi Jones.
In the 32nd minute, Jones delivered a precise through pass to Alassana Jatta, who broke free to open the scoring. Before the first half ended, the winger continued to impress with a tricky free kick, creating a chance for Lucas Ness to head in the second goal.
Salford were almost incapable of resisting. The attacks from the team led by Beckham and Neville lacked speed and creativity, and were frequently easily neutralized by the Notts County defense.
While Salford were still struggling to find hope, Jones sealed the victory with a cool finish in the 70th minute, securing a 3-0 win and sending Notts County back to League One after an 11-year wait.
For Salford, the defeat brought the season to a bitter end. The team had already lost out on direct promotion in the final round and now they have missed out on League One as well, having lost in the play-offs.
The failure in the final stretch was all the more bitter, given that Beckham and Neville had completed their takeover of the entire club last May. The deal saw former teammates from the Class of 1992, such as Nicky Butt, Giggs, Scholes, and Phil Neville, withdraw from their roles as shareholders.
