Hoa Phat wants to participate in the 'revival' of the Thach Khe iron mine.

The Thach Khe iron mine has reserves exceeding 500 million tons and has been planned for exploration, exploitation, and processing according to Decision 866 dated July 18, 2023, of the Prime Minister. Leading experts and scientists from Vietnam and internationally have assessed the iron ore parameters at the Thach Khe mine as quite good.

The magnetite and hematite ores in this mine are relatively clean, suitable for producing high-quality steel such as cold-stamped steel, arc-welded steel wire, elevator cable steel, weather-resistant steel plates, especially steel coils for car tire treads (tirecord steel), high-speed rail steel, and other high-quality steels.

However, to date, the Thach Khe iron mine has not been exploited to meet domestic demand, resulting in a waste of national resources and a drain on foreign currency used to import iron ore.

Ha Tinh province and relevant ministries and agencies are still concerned about eight issues related to the exploitation of the Thach Khe mine, including: subsidence of the mine pit banks, transportation pressure, loss of surface water, environmental risks, waste disposal issues, investor capacity, consumption market, and technology for processing high zinc content in the ore.

Representatives from Hoa Phat Group argued that, given the scale and difficulty of mining at the Thach Khe iron ore mine, only a leading Vietnamese enterprise would have the financial capacity and experience to successfully implement the project. The Thach Khe iron ore mine is located in a central and strategic position in Vietnam, and therefore should not be entrusted to a foreign investor to ensure national security and defense.

"For the common goal of developing Vietnam's metallurgical industry, Hoa Phat is ready to form a joint venture with other leading Vietnamese corporations such as Vinacomin, Thaco, Vingroup… to jointly research and implement this project," a representative of the group shared.

Recently, Hoa Phat Group proposed to the Government that it invite leading consulting organizations and experts in metallurgy and mining from around the world to participate in research and provide assessments on technological issues, environmental impacts, and mining safety for the Thach Khe iron ore mine.

"Hoa Phat is ready to contribute costs and, together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, hire independent consultants to supervise the work and participate in the evaluation and research. The exploitation of the Thach Khe iron mine requires a production plan that is absolutely safe for the locality, based on thorough and scientific exploration, research, and evaluation. If conditions are met, we will quickly begin exploitation, especially during this crucial stage of economic growth. If conditions are not yet met, we will leave it for future generations, as directed by General Secretary and President To Lam during his visit to Ha Tinh," emphasized the leader of Vietnam's largest steel company.
