Da Nang begins to wipe out the "sacred ground" of football in Central Vietnam.
A large number of machines and workers were mobilized to Chi Lang Stadium to begin the dismantling process, marking the moment when Da Nang's once-sacred football "sanctuary" gradually faded into memory after years of abandonment.
Chi Lang Stadium, built decades ago, was once a famous sporting symbol of Da Nang and the Central region. It hosted numerous exciting matches in Vietnamese football, especially during the golden age ofSHB Da Nang FC. More than just a football stadium, Chi Lang is also considered a part of the urban memory of the people of Da Nang. After years of being plagued by legal issues, planning problems, and asset handling related to economic crimes, the Chi Lang stadium is now being demolished to clear the land for auction. According to observations by a reporter from Dan Viet, at the Chi Lang stadium area, many machines and workers have been mobilized to begin the dismantling work. Heavy machinery was deployed to demolish structures inside the stadium, once considered the "sacred ground" of football in Central Vietnam.
Reportedly, Thang Long Construction Machinery Engineering Joint Stock Company is the contractor for the demolition, dismantling, and liquidation of assets at Chi Lang Stadium, with a contract value of over 2.2 billion VND. The demolition work is being carried out urgently to clear the site for the auction of the property. After being abandoned for a long time, Chi Lang Stadium is now facing a dilapidated and severely degraded condition. Regarding this land area, the Da Nang City Asset Auction Service Center has put up for auction 10 land use right certificates for 14 plots of land, with a starting price of over 9.706 billion VND. Rocks and debris lay scattered inside the stadium. Related structures were also dismantled.
The start of the stadium's demolition is seen as a new milestone in the renovation and reconstruction of Da Nang's city center, and also marks the end of the journey of a stadium once known as the "cauldron" of Central Vietnam football. Residents quickly moved their belongings out of the demolition area. Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa (52 years old, residing in Hai Chau ward) said that he had often gone to Chi Lang Stadium to watch football since he was a young man, so witnessing the stadium being dismantled evoked very special feelings in him. “In the past, every weekend my friends and I would gather at the stadium to watch football. The atmosphere here was very passionate, especially when SHB Da Nang was still strong. Now, seeing the stadium being dismantled makes me feel regretful, but the city has to change as it develops,” Mr. Hoa shared. The area around Chi Lang Stadium has been fenced off with corrugated iron sheets, notices about ongoing construction have been posted, and people are prohibited from entering to ensure safety.
