Immediately after the liberation of South Vietnam, Professor-Doctor Nguyen Thien Thanh, along with a team of officials, doctors, and medical staff, took over the Vi Dan Hospital facility, organized the building of the team, and established the Thong Nhat Military Hospital.
On November 1, 1975, the facility received its first patients for treatment, and nearly 10 months later, on August 27, 1976, the hospital officially adopted the name Thong Nhat Hospital.
Over half a century of development, alongside the history of the country and Ho Chi Minh City, Thong Nhat Hospital has made significant contributions, marking the dedication of generations of medical professionals.
Having just emerged from the flames of war, the medical team continued to overcome all difficulties to ensure treatment, with a spirit of solidarity, discipline, and dedication.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Thong Nhat Hospital pioneered participation in all disease prevention and control tasks, contributing to Ho Chi Minh City's efforts to push back the epidemic.
Currently, the hospital has successfully implemented and mastered many advanced techniques and specialties that meet international standards. With a capacity of 1,200 beds, the hospital receives approximately 1,200 outpatient visits and 5,000 inpatients daily.

At the ceremony, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan highly appreciated the outstanding achievements and contributions of Thong Nhat Hospital. The Ministry of Health requested the hospital to continue refining its plan and developing it into a comprehensive, high-tech, specialized geriatric hospital.
At the same time, research is being conducted on establishing a rehabilitation and nursing center for the elderly, serving officials and the public, and meeting the urgent needs of society.

On this special occasion, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, presented the First-Class Independence Order to Thong Nhat Hospital; and awarded the Labor Order to two collectives and one individual.
In addition, six groups and individuals from Thong Nhat Hospital were also honored with Certificates of Commendation from the Prime Minister.
