Forced into a corner, Apple chooses to rename iOS

Instead of announcing new developments in AI, Apple plans to change the names of its operating systems to identify them by years, rather than version numbers, starting with iOS 26 and other updates.

While Google and OpenAI are still leading the tech world by continuously developing advanced AI features and technologies, Apple is focused on creating a more consistent experience in design across its platforms.

Specifically, an insider source revealed that the company's next operating systems will be identified by years, rather than versions. That means instead of iOS 19, the iPhone maker will release iOS 26 this coming September. Other updates will be known as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.

BGR believes that this could be a sign that Apple wants to "avoid" the AI innovation race. "If all the company brings is renaming iOS 19 to iOS 26, it's hard to say that they are leading anything," BGR commented.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 on June 9, Apple will officially open up Apple Intelligence models to third parties. This is considered an important move for the company after deploying tools such as Genmoji, Image Playground and text summarization feature. Previously, the iPhone maker did not allow outside developers to access its platforms.

Gurman revealed a new software development kit (SDK) and accompanying features that will allow third-party apps to integrate and build directly, and they will run on the same large language model the company uses for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

But instead of using powerful AI running in a company-run cloud, developers will be given access to a stripped-down version that runs on the device. This offers fast response times and privacy, but it also limits processing power.

"This is a clear effort by the company to boost its AI ecosystem after a shaky start. Some features like notification summaries have been criticized for being factually inaccurate, while Genmoji has failed to live up to expectations despite its heavy promotion," said Mark Gurman.
