Thanh Ha Pottery Village - Hoi An

The Nam Dieu-Thanh Ha pottery village (Thanh Ha ward, former Quang Nam province) was formed around the 16th and 17th centuries by a number of craftsmen from Thanh Hoa and Nghe An who came to Thanh Ha to build a village, bringing with them the pottery craft. The village flourished most in the first half of the 19th century, and was recorded by the Nguyen dynasty in the book Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi, in the section on Quang Nam's local products.

The village has approximately 320 households and about 1000 residents, of which 105 households and 212 people are involved in pottery making. With its unique cultural values and rich history that are constantly being preserved and promoted, in August 2019, Thanh Ha pottery was included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

This pottery village, over 500 years old, still preserves intact the traditional handcrafted pottery making process along with many folk knowledge values associated with the formation of the village and the development of Hoi An as a trading port city.

Closely associated with tangible cultural heritage is a large body of intangible cultural heritage such as: knowledge of pottery production (traditional and artistic), stoneware, bricks, tiles, making Kitchen God statues, lime burning, and the division of labor and organization of production.

Following the merger, the pottery village is now located in Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang city. In the central area of the pottery village, there are currently 10 classified historical sites included in the list of protected sites.
