Google is quietly testing a promising new feature for Gemini that allows users to directly highlight key areas in images before sending them to the AI for processing. This tool is expected to help Gemini better understand the content users want to convey, thereby improving the efficiency of image analysis and editing.

Several months ago, tech experts spotted signs that Google was developing the ability to watermark images when sharing them with the Gemini app. Later leaks revealed that a similar feature was also being prepared for the web version of Gemini. Currently, both versions appear to have entered the real-world testing phase.

According to feedback from a user named Diego on Telegram, the image tagging feature has appeared on both the Gemini mobile app and Gemini on the Chrome browser. When users first attach an image in Gemini on Android, the app displays a notification introducing this new tool, indicating that Google is proactively familiarizing users with the change.

Beyond simply editing images, the highlighting tool helps Gemini focus its attention on specific areas within the image. This allows the AI to easily identify the precise content being discussed when users enter commands or ask questions, rather than analyzing the entire image in a general way.

During real-world testing, Gemini demonstrated a fairly good ability to understand user intent through marked areas. While the analysis results were sometimes not entirely accurate, the system still correctly identified the object or area the user wanted to refer to, such as correctly identifying the person in a specific location in a group photo.

Currently, it's unclear whether Google is rolling out this feature on a limited scale or has already begun a wider rollout to Gemini users. However, it's likely that Google will clarify the scope of this tool's availability in the near future. In the meantime, users can check on their devices to see if they've already experienced Gemini's new image tagging capabilities.
