SEA Games 33: Vietnamese Wushu strives to maintain its position.

VHO - Wushu has always been considered one of the "gold mines" of Vietnamese martial arts at the SEA Games. This year, despite facing numerous subjective and objective difficulties, Vietnamese Wushu athletes will continue to strive to bring glory to the country's sports.

Duong Thuy Vi is expected to win a gold medal for Vietnam in Wushu today, December 13th.

This year, the number of events has been significantly reduced, with only 10 Taolu events (5 men and 5 women) and 4 Sanda events (2 men, 2 women). This has made the competition for medals between delegations much more intense and fierce.

The Vietnamese Wushu team participated in the SEA Games 33 with its best players, including: Duong Thuy Vi, Dang Tran Phuong Nhi, Ngo Thi Phuong Nga, Nguyen Van Phuong, Nong Van Huu, Vu Van Tuan, Do Duc Tai, etc.

VHO - The Wushu Department of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Education Department announced that the Vietnamese Wushu team won two gold medals at the 2025 World Wushu Championships held in Brazil.

Most notably, Duong Thuy Vi is one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of Vietnamese Wushu and a key factor in significantly increasing the team's chances of winning gold medals.

Duong Thuy Vi is Vietnam's "golden hope" for Wushu at every SEA Games. She has consistently stood on the top podium at the Games in 2015, 2017, 2022, and 2023.

However, the female athlete born in 1993 will face a major challenge as the host country has combined her strongest events—fist, sword, and spear—into a single event. This requires the athlete to maintain stability, focus, and create a higher level of difficulty in all three parts of the competition.

Thuy Vi shared: “The host country, Thailand, combined the individual events into three routines to win one medal. Since Thailand isn't particularly strong in individual events like long fist, sword, and women's spear, they combined them into one all-around event. This made the competition even more difficult than at the Asian Games. Therefore, it forced Wushu athletes to train harder and perform longer routines.”

Despite the difficulties, the athletes from Hanoi believe that when they step onto the field, they will compete with all their might and the highest level of determination.

"I'm confident; I'll show what I can do whenever I step onto the court. I hope that I and the whole team can continue to bring success to Vietnamese Wushu," Thuy Vi expressed.

At the 33rd SEA Games, Vietnamese Wushu aims to win at least 3 gold medals. Of these, Taolu is likely to contribute 1 to 2 gold medals, while Sanda aims for an additional 1 gold medal.

This target is considerably more modest than the team's achievements in the last two SEA Games (13 gold medals at SEA Games 31, 6 gold medals at SEA Games 32), but it is reasonable for SEA Games 33 and somewhat reduces the pressure on the athletes.

With thorough and coordinated preparation and a high sense of responsibility from the athletes, the Vietnamese Wushu team is expected to achieve its goals and make a positive contribution to the overall achievements of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at this SEA Games.
