In an effort to accelerate the language technology race, Google is rolling out a beta version of a new feature that allows users to listen to translations directly through headphones in real time.

The announcement, made on December 12th in San Francisco, marks the next step by the American tech giant in upgrading its translation and language learning services, which are already familiar to billions of users worldwide.

According to Google, the new feature, integrated into the Google Translate app, allows for the creation of live translations while preserving the speaker's tone, emphasis, and rhythm.

This is a key difference, helping listeners not only understand the content but also sense the nuances of the conversation, thus allowing them to follow the exchange more naturally and seamlessly.

In a blog post on the company's official website, Rose Yao, Google's Vice President of Product and Service Development for Search, described very common and simple application scenarios for this feature.

Whether trying to converse in another language, listen to a speech or attend a seminar abroad, or even watch a TV show or movie in an unfamiliar language, users can now simply put on their headphones, open the Google Translate app, tap the “Live translate” button, and instantly hear a real-time translation in their chosen language.

In the testing phase, this beta feature is being rolled out on Android devices in three markets: the US, Mexico, and India.

Google says the system currently supports over 70 languages and is compatible with all types of headphones, requiring no specialized hardware. This opens up broad accessibility, from general users to those who frequently travel, work, or study in multilingual environments.

Google also confirmed plans to expand the feature to iOS devices and more countries in 2026.
