Belgium has marked a significant milestone in its military modernization process with the launch of the first Griffon 6×6 Véhicule Blindé Multi-Rôle (VBMR) heavy multi-purpose armored vehicle at a local facility in Mol, Staden, West Flanders.

Belgian Defense and Foreign Trade Minister Theo Francken confirmed in a press conference that the first batch of these vehicles is expected to be delivered to military units by the end of 2025, strategically replacing the aging Dingo armored vehicle fleet.

The assembly plant at Mol handles the final stages of vehicle preparation, including the installation of state-of-the-art equipment, comprehensive testing, and finishing touches such as painting. During the production period from 2025 to 2031, the plant is expected to manufacture 380 Griffon vehicles, achieving a production rate of approximately ten vehicles per month.

Francken emphasized that the Griffon would significantly enhance the combat effectiveness of the Belgian Armed Forces, providing superior mobility and rapid response capabilities on the battlefield.

Key features of the vehicle include: Integrated smoke exhaust system: Enhances concealment and protection. Modular weapon system: Ensures adaptability to various missions. The Griffon's basic design flexibility is remarkable as it is produced in many different configurations, including variants for infantry, medical evacuation, command and control, and artillery support.

Enhanced Protection and Connectivity: Developed by the French SCORPION consortium – which includes KNDS, Arquus, and Thales – the Griffon is designed to counter ballistic threats, mines, and improvised explosive devices. The vehicle is equipped with the SCORPION Combat Information System (SICS), enabling real-time digital connectivity, a key element in modern warfare.

The Griffon VBMR armored vehicle is part of the Franco-Belgian Capacité Motorisée (CaMo) initiative, which also includes Belgium's purchase of 60 Jaguar armored reconnaissance vehicles. This collaboration underscores the commitment of both nations to enhancing military interoperability and defense capabilities. Infrastructure Development at Mol: To support the assembly of the Griffon vehicles, Mol established a new 5,500-square-meter workshop equipped with an on-site test track.

Employees participating in this program underwent intensive training at the SCORPION production line in Roanne, France, contributing to the enhancement of expertise that is being shared among Belgian colleagues.

With the commissioning of the Griffon VBMR, Belgium is making significant strides in modernizing its military fleet. This new asset not only promises to enhance combat capabilities but also demonstrates a broader strategic commitment to strengthening defense cooperation in Europe. The Griffon's versatility makes it an essential asset for the Belgian Armed Forces as they face the complexities of contemporary military engagements.
