A few days ago, a female patient named D.TC (37 years old, residing in Tan Viet, Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh) was hospitalized with abdominal cramps around the navel accompanied by constipation and bowel movements.

At the hospital, the doctor performed a CT scan and endoscopy and discovered that the patient had an intestinal obstruction caused by a food mass. According to the patient, about 1-2 weeks ago, Ms. C. ate about 5 persimmons at the same time when she was hungry.

After 1 hour of endoscopy, the doctors removed 2 food particles from the stomach and 1 particle from the small intestine of the patient.

Doctor Do Quang Ut (Department of Gastroenterology, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital), said that food lumps are formed due to the accumulation of ingested substances in the form of indigestible blocks or solid blocks. As in the case of patient C., eating a lot of persimmons when hungry is also one of the causes of food lumps. Because persimmons contain a resin that binds food, creating large food lumps that are difficult to digest.

Through this, Dr. Ut also recommends that people need to be careful, especially those who have had a partial gastrectomy, have oral diseases that reduce chewing function, have the habit of eating too fast without chewing thoroughly; do not eat unripe fruits with astringent taste (persimmons, figs, guava) and foods with a lot of fiber... When there are symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, bowel movements, and increasing bloating, you should go to medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment.
