A few days ago, a female patient named D.TC (37 years old, residing in Tan Viet, Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh) was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain around the navel accompanied by constipation and difficulty defecating.

At the hospital, doctors performed a CT scan and gastroscopy, discovering that the patient had an intestinal obstruction caused by a food bolus. According to the patient, about 1-2 weeks prior, Ms. C. ate approximately 5 persimmons at once on an empty stomach.

After an hour-long endoscopy, the doctors removed two food boluses from the patient's stomach and one from their small intestine.

Dr. Do Quang Ut (Department of Gastroenterology, Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital) explained that food boluses form due to the accumulation of ingested substances in the form of undigested masses or clumps. In the case of patient C., eating a large amount of persimmons on an empty stomach was one of the causes of the food bolus formation. This is because persimmons contain a resinous substance that causes food to stick together, creating large, difficult-to-digest food boluses.

Through this, Dr. Ut also advises people to be cautious, especially those who have undergone partial gastrectomy, have oral diseases that reduce chewing function, or have the habit of eating too quickly without chewing thoroughly; avoid eating unripe fruits with a bitter taste (persimmons, figs, guavas) and foods high in fiber... When experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, and progressively worsening bloating, they should go to medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment.
