Intestinal obstruction due to eating 5 pickled persimmons on an empty stomach

On September 23, information from the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital ( Quang Ninh ) said that doctors here had just performed surgery on a case of intestinal obstruction due to 3 large food lumps measuring 5x6 cm.

A few days ago, a female patient named D.TC (37 years old, residing in Tan Viet, Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh) was hospitalized with abdominal cramps around the navel accompanied by constipation and diarrhea.

At the hospital, the doctor performed a CT scan and endoscopy and discovered that the patient had a bowel obstruction caused by a food lump. According to the patient, about 1-2 weeks ago, Ms. C. ate about 5 persimmons at the same time when she was hungry.

After 1 hour of endoscopy, the doctors removed 2 food particles from the patient's stomach and 1 particle from the patient's small intestine.

Doctor Do Quang Ut (Department of Gastroenterology, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital), said that food lumps are formed due to the accumulation of ingested substances in the form of indigestible lumps or solids. As in the case of patient C., eating a lot of persimmons when hungry is also one of the causes of food lumps. Because persimmons contain resin that causes food to stick together, creating large food lumps that are difficult to digest.

Through this, Dr. Ut also recommends that people need to be careful, especially those who have had a partial gastrectomy, have oral diseases that reduce chewing function, have the habit of eating too quickly without chewing thoroughly; do not eat unripe fruits with astringent taste (persimmons, figs, guava) and foods with high fiber content... When there are symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, bowel movements, and increasing bloating, you should go to medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment.
