At the end of April, the Women's Union of Kien Luong commune launched the "Green House" model in Ba Hon hamlet. Through this model, women members are encouraged to collect and sort waste at the source. Recyclable waste such as plastic bottles, cans, and scrap paper are collected at the "Green House" to be sold and used to raise funds to support women members in difficult circumstances.
Ms. Tran Thi Dam, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Kien Luong Commune, said: "The model has initially received a positive response from members and residents. Through waste sorting activities, people's awareness of environmental protection has gradually improved. We hope that the model will continue to be expanded so that more and more people will participate."
Thanks to the initial success of the model, many households have formed the habit of sorting household waste at home. Ms. Vu Thi Minh, residing in Ba Hon hamlet, shared that previously, different types of waste were often mixed together, but since participating in the model, her family has proactively sorted plastic bottles, cans, and scrap paper to bring to the "Green House".
Besides the "Green House" model, the People's Committee of Kien Luong commune also coordinates with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and other commune organizations to implement many practical environmental protection activities such as the waste-for-gifts exchange program with INSEE Company; maintaining the "5 no's, 3 clean, 3 safe" models; and mobilizing religious organizations to participate in environmental protection.
On the 5th of every month, the local authorities launch a comprehensive environmental cleanup campaign, collecting waste along traffic routes and in residential areas. Simultaneously, they encourage residents to plant trees, create flower-lined roads, and maintain rural landscapes. These activities contribute to raising community awareness and gradually fostering the habit of maintaining environmental hygiene in daily life.
Simultaneously, the local authorities are paying close attention to waste collection and treatment. Currently, all main roads in the commune have specialized vehicles for collecting household waste. Approximately 50 tons of waste are collected and transported to a centralized treatment facility daily. The area has a waste treatment plant with a capacity of 100 tons per day, meeting the needs for receiving and processing the generated waste.
Furthermore, the handling of accumulated waste is hampered by obstacles in the procedures related to bidding and signing waste treatment contracts with receiving units. According to Tran Binh Trong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Luong commune, the locality considers environmental protection a regular and long-term task. In the coming time, the commune will continue to promote awareness campaigns, organize training courses to guide people in sorting waste at source, and replicate effective environmental protection models.
For areas without garbage collection vehicles, the local authorities encourage residents to adopt appropriate waste disposal methods such as composting, constructing incineration pits, or using sanitary landfills. Simultaneously, the commune strengthens inspections and takes action against environmental violations, gradually improving the waste collection, transportation, and treatment system, contributing to a better living environment and creating an increasingly green, clean, and beautiful rural landscape.
