For quite some time now, Qatar has been prominent in the world for its success as a diplomatic intermediary between several parties such as between the US and the Taliban in Afghanistan, between Sudan and Chad, between Eritrea and Djibouti... Intermediary diplomacy has become a very important part of Qatar's foreign policy and has contributed greatly to helping this small kingdom increase its position, role and influence in world politics .
Now, Qatar has stopped its diplomatic mediation between Israel and Hamas not because of a change in foreign policy orientation or because of frustration and disappointment, but because it was forced to do so to avoid doing more harm than good. In 2012, the Obama administration in the US asked Qatar to allow Hamas to set up a representative office, that is, a place of residence, so that Hamas would not choose Syria or Iran as its home.
A few days ago, the Biden administration again asked Qatar to expel Hamas. Once the US side no longer allows Qatar to be neutral in all matters related to Hamas, it will be very difficult for Qatar to continue to successfully mediate between Israel and Hamas.
With Donald Trump back in power in the US, Israel is even less willing to compromise with Hamas. Qatar’s special diplomatic intermediary mission is more likely to fail and less likely to succeed. So the sooner it gives up its role, the better it can save its reputation.
