In the early hours of February 25th, Inter Milan were eliminated from the Champions League after a 1-2 defeat against Bodo/Glimt at home. The aggregate score after two legs was 2-5, a humiliating result for a team that had reached the Champions League final twice in the last three seasons.

Earlier, reigning Serie A champions Napoli also disappointed by being eliminated in the Champions League qualifying round. The fact that a team that had just won the Scudetto was eliminated so early from continental competition shows the growing gap between Serie A and other top leagues.

Other clubs like Atalanta and Juventus are also in danger after suffering defeats against Dortmund and Galatasaray respectively in the first leg of the play-off round, facing the risk of early elimination. The prospect of Serie A having no representatives in the Champions League knockout rounds is becoming increasingly likely.

Notably, since Inter's Champions League victory in the 2009/10 season, no Italian club has been able to reach the pinnacle of European football. More than a decade has passed, and Serie A is still struggling to recapture its former glory.

At the national team level, Italy is facing the risk of missing out on the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Following the shocks of failing to qualify in 2018 and 2022, the prospect of missing out on the biggest football event on the planet once again is a cause for concern among fans. A footballing nation that has won the World Cup four times is now struggling in the race to qualify for the most prestigious tournament.

All these facts show that Italian football needs a radical rebuilding process, from its youth training system and league development strategy to its tactical mindset. Without fundamental changes, Italy's position on the world football map could continue to decline.

The moment a player saved a seagull went viral. On February 23rd, Gani Catan caused a sensation with the moment he saved a seagull's life when Istanbul Yurdum lost to Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar, a team ranked 7th in the Turkish Super League.
