According to National Archives Center 1, the first building (designed by architect Henri Vildieu) was built in neoclassical style around 1893 - 1899. The two-storey building (because it was located near the lake and Turtle Tower, the French only allowed low-rise architecture), wooden stairs, black slate tiled roof (ardoise)... The main facade faces Dinh Tien Hoang Street, the side facade faces today's Le Thach Street. The area of this building was formerly Bao An Pagoda (the Hoa Phong Tower remains in front of the post office today). Since 1910, the building has been renovated and expanded many times. Another block of buildings was built next to Bac Bo Palace, on today's Le Thach Street.

In 1976, the post office was newly built with 5 floors in modern architecture with "aid" from China (the current VNPT building). The highlight of the building is the 4-sided square clock tower, each side is 4.5 m long. In 1996, the building was put on the list of "re-examining newly built architectural works that have a negative impact on the landscape and spatial layout". (*)
