Initial statistics indicate that the landslide caused the collapse of a 40-meter section of embankment, a 60-meter section of road, and the complete destruction of one house, with estimated damages of 3 billion VND. There were no casualties, but the incident affected transportation and trade for local residents.

Mr. Bui Van Tam, a local resident who witnessed the landslide, said that while jogging in the morning at the embankment, he saw the ground moving, and then the road and embankment collapsed into the river. The landslide happened very quickly. Before the incident occurred, residents quickly reported it to the local authorities and also hung warning signs to ensure the safety of passersby. Not far away, several sections also showed cracks, posing a risk of further landslides.

According to Le Tan Cong, Vice Chairman of the Dam Doi Commune People's Committee, immediately after the incident occurred, representatives of the Party Committee and the People's Committee of Dam Doi Commune were present at the scene to direct relevant agencies and assist residents in relocating their belongings and comforting those whose property was damaged. They also conducted surveys, erected warning signs at the landslide site, and urged residents in high-risk areas to continue moving their belongings to safe locations.

“The commune will continue to survey vulnerable areas at risk of landslides to find temporary solutions, and at the same time, propose to higher authorities to pay attention to investing in the construction of embankment works to prevent landslides and ensure the safety of people's lives and property. We will educate people to raise awareness of prevention, proactively relocate when they detect cracks in the ground, house foundations, gardens, and signs of landslides so that timely response measures can be taken to minimize potential damage,” said Mr. Le Tan Cong.

In recent days, the landslide situation in Ca Mau province has become complicated. Previously, on April 21st, a landslide occurred on the Bac Lieu - Ca Mau canal in Hamlet 13, Tan Thanh Ward, with a length of nearly 30 meters and a depth of more than 10 meters, completely destroying 4 houses into the river and affecting 2 houses, requiring relocation. The estimated property damage is approximately 900 million VND.

On April 22nd, a serious landslide occurred on Kinh Xang Dong Hung road in Kinh Lon hamlet, Cai Nuoc commune, causing a collapse of the road with a width of 4.5 meters, a length of 61 meters, and a depth of nearly 1 meter, affecting the movement of local people.

Since the beginning of the 2025-2026 dry season, Ca Mau province has experienced dozens of serious landslides in the communes of Tran Van Thoi, Hong Dan, Ninh Quoi, Phuoc Long, Vinh Phuoc, Cai Nuoc, Dam Doi, Khanh Binh, and Tan Thanh ward. Specifically, since the beginning of April 2026, Ca Mau has seen 4 serious landslides, with estimated damages exceeding 4 billion VND.

According to assessments by relevant authorities, due to the increasingly severe impacts of climate change, riverbank and canal erosion in the Mekong Delta region in general and Ca Mau in particular is becoming more complex. Erosion occurs not only during the rainy season but also during the dry season, significantly affecting the lives and production of the people.

Experts warn that people living along rivers and canals should pay attention to signs such as: cracks appearing parallel to the riverbank on the foundations of houses, yards, or pathways; trees and fences along the river leaning towards the water flow; etc., which indicate a very high risk of landslides. People should proactively take measures to respond to landslides.
