Van Dung is one of the artists who has been involved in the Táo Quân (Kitchen Gods) show since its early days. Over the past 20 years, she has played many different Kitchen God roles, but perhaps her most memorable role for the audience remains that of the Health Kitchen God.
To television viewers, she is the number one comedic actress in Northern Vietnam, a familiar face in television dramas. However, Van Dung's main job is as an actress at the Hanoi Drama Theatre.
One of Van Dung's greatest joys is that her only son, Long Vu, shares her love of acting and has become a beloved young actor. She has always been very private about her son's artistic journey, from his time studying at the Hanoi University of Theatre and Film to his rise to stardom on screen.
Responding to reporters, the actress said: "Previously, Long Vũ hadn't achieved anything, so I had no reason to show him off. There was a time when Long Vũ asked me why I didn't show off his certificates and medals online or share them with fans. I told him that I hadn't seen how talented he was yet; his achievements were only within the school setting, and there are many people outside who are more talented than him. If he were truly talented, people would see his brilliance wherever he went, but if he wasn't, no one would pay attention even if he showed off."
Specifically, Van Dung stated that she has never used her influence to secure roles for her son. All of Long Vu's roles were obtained through his own participation in casting calls.
In a conversation with reporters, Long Vũ also admitted this and added: "I only asked my mother to let me know if she knew of any films looking for actors. But every time I asked, she said she didn't know because she doesn't go to castings."
After several supporting roles in films such as "A Small Path into Life," "Our Family is Suddenly Happy," "Not Afraid to Get Married Just Need a Reason," and "The War Without Boundaries," Long Vũ shone with a leading role in the film "Walking Amidst the Brilliant Sky ." For this role, he was nominated for a VTV Awards.
Regarding her son's success, Van Dung shared: "Perhaps, in this world, there is no mother who wouldn't be happy to see her child achieve even a little success. As for me, I must say I'm very happy. After 23 years of raising my son, I've only waited for this day. I never imagined my son would surpass me."
In the past, I didn't become known to the audience until I was 27. My son, who is not yet 23, has already made a slight impression on the audience. Compared to other actors, this success has come very early. I'm happy, but I'm also worried because what will Long Vũ have left to offer the audience afterwards, so that they will continue to love and support him on his long journey?"
Like Van Dung, her close colleague, People's Artist Cong Ly, is also happy to have a child following in his footsteps. Thuc Anh, the eldest daughter of "Co Dau," graduated from the directing department of the Hanoi University of Theatre and Film. After graduation, she worked as a production assistant and film crew secretary for the Television Film Production Center (VFC) of VTV.
In early 2024, Thuc Anh secretly made her graduation documentary , "There's a Constellation," with her father as the main character. The young director wanted to offer different perspectives on People's Artist Cong Ly that the audience didn't know. In the film, she shares about the biggest tragedy in her family, the period when People's Artist Cong Ly suffered a stroke. That was also when Thuc Anh realized how much she loved her father.
Sharing with reporters, the daughter of People's Artist Cong Ly said that initially, her father did not support her pursuit of the seventh art: "When I was preparing to enter university, I asked my father's opinion about becoming an actress, but at that time he disagreed because he was worried that I would have a hard time and easily get involved in scandals. After that, I reconsidered that I still wanted to pursue art, but I only wanted to work behind the scenes of productions, not be a performer."
I expressed my desire to become a director, but my father wasn't entirely convinced because it's a very demanding profession. However, seeing my determination, he said that if I liked it, I should just go for it. I think it's not that he doesn't like me pursuing art, but rather that he's worried about how hard it will be for me."
The young female director said that many people in the industry know she is the daughter of People's Artist Cong Ly, but she doesn't receive special treatment; instead, she faces even stricter discipline. The male artist also supports his daughter with her schoolwork.
People's Artist Cong Ly's youngest son is also taking his first steps into acting. Although he didn't study acting, Gia Bao has participated in several VFC films recently. MC Thao Van commented on her son's choice: "I'm letting Gia Bao try his luck, to see if he can inherit anything from his father… I hope he learns a lot from the actors and actresses. He must have his father's genes, right?"
Conversely, although both of Meritorious Artist Chí Trung's children come from a family of actors (both their parents, People's Artist Ngọc Huyền, are talented actors), they did not pursue art. Minh Trung, the youngest son of the "Traffic God" (a famous actor in the popular Vietnamese comedy show "Táo Giao thông"), is currently a translator. Because of his famous parents, Minh Trung wants to make his own mark in his career. He chose this profession based on his love of books and his aptitude for foreign languages.
"Translating books allows me to make a name for myself and create something valuable for young people," Minh Trung said. He now has a stable career and lives happily with his wife and two lovely children.
Huyen Trang, the eldest daughter of Meritorious Artist Chi Trung, is also very talented. She was a student at the Diplomatic Academy. After graduating, she went to Australia to study Marketing for another year before returning to Vietnam to work for a foreign company.
"Traffic God" (a character from the Vietnamese comedy show "Tao Giao Thong") once expressed pride in his daughter's abilities, noting that she was financially independent at a young age and bought her own house. Meanwhile, People's Artist Ngoc Huyen occasionally shares her joy at receiving designer gifts from her daughter.
Huyen Trang was previously married to her boyfriend of 9 years. However, after 3 years of living together, they couldn't find common ground and separated. After the divorce, Chi Trung's daughter has been very private about her personal life.
