Most hotels have a policy that guests do not arbitrarily bring back items from the buffet, but experts suggest ways to bring back leftovers if guests find it wasteful.
Readers Mai Hoan wondered if they could bring the bad food from the hotel breakfast buffet to their room if they couldn't use it all on the spot due to being too full? If left, the food will be thrown away causing waste.
According to travel experts, this depends on the policies of each hotel and the country you are visiting. Most accommodation establishments are not allowed to arbitrarily bring food from the buffet out. However, with leftovers and little dishes, you can ask the service staff directly to receive the most optimal solution. If you want to avoid waste, guests should take just enough and eat everything they choose.
Can I bring leftovers from the hotel breakfast buffet to my room?
Buffet is a buffet, guests can eat and take unlimited food. If everyone sneaks home, the hotel will "lose". It is also related to food safety issues. If guests bring out the goods and store them improperly, they will cause damage and stalemate. Ingesting guests can cause stomach upset, poisoning and trouble for the hotel. If you eat on-site, the restaurant can control the quality of the food.
For busy guests who are unable to have breakfast at the hotel, they will be provided with a carry-out bag. AccorHotels, which operates the hotel brands Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel or IHG Hotels & Resorts all apply this policy. But if guests are caught sneaking out of the buffet, they could be fined.
Duncan Morrison, executive chef of Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park, said he had seen a lot of guests sneaking food and cakes and putting them in bags to take home. Andre Jaques, marketing and sales director of luxury hotel The Langham Melbourne, has a similar experience. “We have a strict food hygiene policy. Our staff is very adept at managing food and preventing guests from taking things out,” Jaques said.
