From the heights of Bayern, Douglas Costa has fallen to the fourth division of Italian football.

At 35, Douglas Costa is no longer seen on the big stages of Europe. The player who won numerous titles with Bayern Munich and Juventus now plays for Chievo Verona, a team currently competing in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian football.

Costa rose to prominence in 2010 when he left Gremio for Europe to join Shakhtar Donetsk. In five seasons in Ukraine, he won five domestic league titles and impressed with his speed and dribbling ability.

That performance led to Costa being signed by Bayern Munich. During his three years with the German club, the Brazilian international won two Bundesliga titles. During this period, he was loaned to Juventus for one season before the Turin club bought him outright in 2018.

At Juventus, Costa played for four years and won three Serie A titles. However, this period also saw him leave the club on loan several times, including familiar destinations such as Gremio, Bayern Munich, and LA Galaxy. Upon returning to Bayern on loan, he added another Bundesliga title to his tally.

After leaving Juventus, Costa entered a nomadic phase in his career. He successively played for LA Galaxy (signing a permanent contract in 2022), Fluminense, and Sydney FC.

Last January, Costa returned to Italy when he signed a short-term contract with Chievo Verona until the end of the season. He has featured in the team's last three matches, starting twice.

Previously, Costa became a free agent in September after Sydney FC terminated his contract by mutual agreement. The reason given was ongoing legal and personal issues in Brazil. Despite having 12 months remaining on his original two-year contract, he was unable to continue playing in Australia.

Throughout his career, Costa scored 15 goals and provided 30 assists in 97 appearances for Bayern Munich. At Juventus, he scored 10 goals and provided 22 assists in 103 appearances. From the pinnacle of European football to the fourth division of Italian football, Costa's journey vividly reflects the harsh ups and downs of professional football.
