We need to maintain and promote a reading culture.

Along with socio-economic development, the explosion of the digital revolution is gradually changing the way people receive information. As technology changes, so too is reading culture, especially the declining number of people reading traditional printed books and newspapers, particularly young people. Therefore, spreading the values and beauty of reading culture in today's community is of particular importance, contributing to the formation of new individuals with knowledge, ethics, character, and a good lifestyle.

READING HABITS ARE GRADUALLY CHANGING

Today, the rapid development of science and technology leaves many people with less time to read printed books and newspapers. Limited time, coupled with the emergence of many forms of audiovisual entertainment, has changed reading habits.

Globalization in general, and the Internet in particular, has caused readers to change their habits of visiting bookstores and libraries; instead, they can use online accounts to purchase eBook versions to read on their computers or smartphones.

In Vietnam, according to surveys, people today read far less books and newspapers than in other countries in the region; only 30% read printed books and newspapers regularly, 44% read occasionally, and 26% do not read books or newspapers at all.

With the rise of mass media and social utilities such as online newspapers, Facebook, and YouTube, it seems there's "no chance" left to maintain the habit of reading. Readers are no longer interested in reading directly from books.

Printed books cannot compete with the convenience of e-books. On the other hand, a reluctance to read, including literary works and research books, is prevalent among many social groups and age ranges.

Speed reading, short readings, and reading thin books are also among the criteria that young readers aim for and choose to optimize their lives.

Furthermore, in recent years, many websites and numerous TikTokers and YouTubers have created a new form of reading: radio books. This makes reading more engaging through the auditory medium, reducing eye strain from excessive browsing on phones and computers.

The series of activities in response to the National Book and Reading Culture Day in Tien Giang province will be organized at locations and times suitable for each activity, with the main focus from April 15th to May 2nd, 2025, under the leadership of various units, with several messages: "Reading culture - Connecting the community", "Together with books, we enter the era of national progress", "Reading books - enriching knowledge, nurturing aspirations, promoting innovation and creativity".

Traditionally, when people think of libraries, they picture rooms filled with books and paper documents.

In reality, the current trend of digital transformation is gradually changing the way traditional libraries operate, ushering in a new era where paper books no longer hold a dominant position.

That method is the electronic library, also known as the digital library. Along with electronic libraries, reading habits have also begun to change, with more and more people accessing reading culture on digital platforms, especially young people.

Discussing solutions for developing a reading culture in the era of digital transformation, many experts have affirmed that it requires the efforts of all levels and sectors with fundamental and synchronized solutions, but above all, it depends on the awareness of each individual citizen.

To make reading a habit for every citizen, close coordination is needed among relevant agencies, publishers, and book companies, who should participate in promoting reading culture development activities in schools and communities.

SPREADING THE BEAUTY OF READING CULTURE

For Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day to have a strong impact on community life, especially among young people, it requires the joint efforts and cooperation of all levels, sectors, organizations, individuals, artists, intellectuals, the business community, and the active participation and support of the people.

To encourage and develop a reading culture in the community, the Provincial People's Committee annually issues a plan to organize Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day. In 2025, the Provincial People's Committee issued a plan to organize the 4th Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in Tien Giang province.

According to the plan, activities include: Organizing Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in the school system, in the public library system, and among youth union members, team members, and children in the province.

This includes organizing the "Reading Culture Ambassador" contest and a storytelling competition about books in English. At the same time, the province will launch activities to encourage participation from book printing and distribution units; provincial departments, agencies, and organizations; and will mobilize book donations, visits, and book donations for disadvantaged children who overcome difficulties to excel in their studies.

According to Vo Nam Phuoc, Director of the Tien Giang Provincial Library, reading is one of the fastest and most effective ways to access knowledge. Regular reading helps us improve our character, recognize positive values for how to behave in life, and understand moral standards for being a good person, thereby forming positive thoughts and striving towards good values.

Reading helps cultivate knowledge, absorb world culture, and enrich oneself. Regular reading also stimulates the brain, improves concentration, enhances analytical and creative thinking, and helps us live more positively.
