High-performance sports need to be developed in depth.

Prime Minister's directives on Vietnamese sports .

On December 18th, at the conference summarizing the work of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024 and outlining key tasks for 2025, chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, government leaders listened to a report summarizing the activities of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024 and the orientations and plans set for 2025.

In this context, sports continue to be one of the key development goals. According to a report by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in 2024, 16 athletes qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris. Although they did not win medals, the athletes and coaches made every effort to compete, and the performance statistics of most athletes improved in areas such as rowing, shooting, archery, and cycling.

In the 2024 international competitions, Vietnamese sports achieved a total of 1,214 international medals (including 482 gold, 360 silver, and 372 bronze). Notable achievements include: the women's futsal team winning the Southeast Asian Championship for the first time; 16 athletes qualifying for the Paris Olympics; Trinh Thu Vinh excelling with two finals appearances in the 10m air pistol and 25m sport pistol events (including a 4th place finish in the 10m air pistol event); the women's volleyball team winning a bronze medal at the World Championships for the first time and a gold medal at the Asian Volleyball Cup for the second time, along with many other outstanding achievements.

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that while the sports sector has made progress, there are still things to ponder, including the fact that Vietnamese sports did not win any medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the culture, sports, and tourism sectors serve as a flexible bridge between the past and the present. Culture is the inherent strength of the nation, sports is the health of the Vietnamese people, and tourism is the promotion and inspiration of Vietnam and its people to the international community.

Therefore, the development of culture, sports, and tourism requires close linkages, as well as specific policies to mobilize the resources and intellect of the Vietnamese people.

Trinh Thu Vinh made it into the top 4 at the Paris Olympics in the women's 10m air pistol event.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also directed that the development of mass sports should focus on breadth, while the development of high-performance sports should focus on depth. This is the direction that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will adopt in drafting its plan for 2025, with the focus being the 33rd SEA Games taking place at the end of next year in Thailand.

Limitations of Vietnamese sports

Reporting to the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism affirmed that high-performance sports have made progress, gradually asserting their position in the region and approaching the level of sports in the continent and the world. However, the development of high-performance sports in Vietnam compared to other countries in the continent and the world is facing major challenges that require innovative thinking and approaches.

At the Paris Olympics, although the performance metrics of most athletes improved, the results showed that the selection and training of key athletes to compete for medals at the world level had not met the set requirements, and the achievements of Vietnamese athletes were still relatively far behind those of the continent and the world.

Furthermore, the management of athlete training is not rigorous enough, and there are still some loopholes that need to be addressed, causing negative public opinion and affecting the reputation and image of Vietnamese sports.

In 2025, Vietnamese sports need a sound strategy to achieve good results at the SEA Games, while also leveraging the SEA Games as a springboard to invest in the ASIAD and the Olympics, which are sporting arenas where Vietnam needs to make a stronger mark. This avoids a situation where focusing resources on the region leads to insufficient investment in key areas to help athletes compete at the Asian and global levels.
