According to the Can Tho City Department of Health, in the first phase, the health check-up program took place simultaneously in four communes: Tan Hoa, Long Phu, Nhon Ai, and Long Binh ward. In three communes/wards (Nhon Ai, Long Binh, and Long Phu), general health check-ups were provided free of charge for the elderly. In Tan Hoa commune, free check-ups for gynecological diseases, cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening, etc., were offered to married women.
The screening program will take place over two days, May 16th and 17th, at each screening location, and is expected to screen approximately 1,000 people.
Specifically, the examination point in Tan Hoa commune examined 500 people on May 16th, while another examination point at the Can Tho City Social Work Center (facility 2 in Vi Thuy commune) will examine approximately 300 people (on May 24th).
During this health check-up, residents will receive a comprehensive health examination: internal medicine, surgery, and specialized services such as dermatology, ophthalmology, dentistry, and otolaryngology. Simultaneously, ultrasound, electrocardiogram, X-ray, and basic laboratory tests will be performed.
At these clinics, people also receive nutritional advice and regular health check-up consultations from doctors.

During this health check-up campaign, the Department of Health has developed software to input data on medical examinations, treatments, and screenings for the public. This data will be transferred to electronic health records for management.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Quoc Cuong, Director of the Can Tho City Department of Health, the first health check-up focused on the elderly, vulnerable people, and people with disabilities, serving as a model for organizing subsequent check-up sessions.
Screening points were set up at commune health stations or commune People's Committees because the health stations lacked sufficient personnel and equipment. The Department of Health mobilized personnel and equipment from general and specialized hospitals and city-level testing facilities to organize screening and provide results quickly to the people.
Regarding funding, the Department of Health proactively mobilizes various sources from the budget, targeted programs, and social contributions.
In the second phase, the focus of the examinations will be on children and schoolchildren. Children under 24 months old will be examined as part of the vaccination campaign at the health station, while children of school age, from 24 months to 18 years old, will be examined at their schools.
According to the Department of Health, the goal of providing free periodic health checkups for the public is not only to raise awareness about proactive health care, but also to help the health sector assess the current state of disease patterns in the community. This will allow for the development of disease prevention solutions tailored to different population groups.
This pilot program is expected by the health sector to help Can Tho gradually expand the model of free periodic health check-ups throughout the entire city in the future.
