According to the Ministry of National Defense 's admission regulations, to apply for admission to military schools, candidates must pass a preliminary round. In addition to physical requirements such as eyes, ears, nose, throat, teeth, jaw, face... there are also separate regulations on height, weight and refractive errors.
Specifically, the group of schools training command, political , and logistics officers, including: Logistics Academy, Air Defense - Air Force, Navy, Border Guard and officer schools: Army 1, Army 2, Politics, Artillery, Engineering, Tank - Armor, Information, Special Forces, Chemical Defense, requires men to be 1.65m or taller, weighing 50kg (no women accepted). Candidates must not be nearsighted.

Schools training technical officers, including the academies: Military Engineering, Military Medicine, Military Science; the Aviation Engineering training system of the Air Defense - Air Force Academy requires males to be 1.63m or taller, weighing 50kg; female candidates must be 1.54m or taller, weighing 48kg. Candidates must have myopia of no more than 3 degrees.
This year, the Ministry of National Defense continues to lower the height standard by 2cm from 1.62m to 1.60m for male candidates with permanent residence of 3 years or more in region 1, islands.
As for male candidates who are ethnic minorities (16 ethnic groups with very few people including: Cong, Mang, Pu Péo, Si La, Co Lao, Bo Y, La Ha, Ngai, Chut, O Du, Brau, Ro Mam, Lo Lo, Lu, Pa Then, La Hu), the height requirement is lowered from 1.60m to 1.58m. Thus, candidates under 1.60m in the above area are eligible for preliminary selection into the military.
Explaining the lowering of height standards for the two groups of candidates above, Major General Nguyen Van Oanh, Deputy Head of the Military Admissions Department, Ministry of National Defense, said that the policy aims to create conditions for many students with difficult circumstances to meet the standards to register for military schools.
Candidates from the above areas will be recruited to help supplement the force for remote areas. Especially for the border guards, recruiting people born and raised locally will be more convenient than mobilizing people from other places.
This year, 17 military schools recruited nearly 4,400 students, a decrease of about 450 compared to last year. During the preliminary selection process, candidates must meet four criteria, including political background, age, culture, and health.
