According to the Ministry of National Defense 's admissions regulations, to apply for admission to military schools, candidates must pass a preliminary selection round. In addition to physical requirements such as eyesight, hearing, nose, throat, teeth, jaw, and face, there are also specific regulations regarding height, weight, and refractive errors.
Specifically, the group of officer training schools for command, political , and logistics officers, including: Logistics Academy, Air Defense-Air Force Academy, Navy Academy, Border Guard Academy, and the following officer schools: Army 1, Army 2, Political Academy, Artillery Academy, Engineering Academy, Armored and Tank Academy, Communications Academy, Special Forces Academy, Chemical Warfare Academy, require male candidates to be at least 1.65m tall and weigh at least 50kg (female candidates are not accepted). Candidates must not have myopia.

Officer training schools specializing in technical fields, including the Military Engineering Academy, Military Medical Academy, and Military Science Academy; and the Aeronautical Engineering program at the Air Defense - Air Force Academy, require male candidates to be at least 1.63m tall and weigh at least 50kg; female candidates must be at least 1.54m tall and weigh at least 48kg. Candidates with myopia must not exceed 3 degrees.
This year, the Ministry of National Defence has further lowered the height requirement by 2cm, from 1.62m to 1.60m, for male candidates with permanent residency for three years or more in Zone 1 and island areas.
For male candidates from ethnic minority groups (16 very small ethnic groups including: Cong, Mang, Pu Peo, Si La, Co Lao, Bo Y, La Ha, Ngai, Chut, O Du, Brau, Ro Mam, Lo Lo, Lu, Pa Then, La Hu), the height requirement has been lowered from 1.60m to 1.58m. Thus, candidates under 1.60m from the above areas are eligible for preliminary selection into the military.
Explaining the lowering of height requirements for the two groups of candidates, Major General Nguyen Van Oanh, Deputy Head of the Military Recruitment Board, Ministry of National Defense, said that the policy aims to create conditions for more students from disadvantaged backgrounds to meet the eligibility criteria to register for military schools.
Candidates from this region will be selected, contributing to the reinforcement of forces in remote areas. Especially for border guards, recruiting people born and raised locally will be more advantageous than deploying people from other places.
This year, 17 military schools are recruiting nearly 4,400 students, a decrease of about 450 compared to last year. During the preliminary selection process, candidates must meet the standards in four areas: political background, age, education, and health.
