A girl died of diphtheria in Cao Bang

Information from the Cao Bang Department of Health said that Giang Mi Hu (born in 2013, Thach Lam commune, Bao Lam district) showed signs of cough and fever since November 14 but still went to school.

After a week of taking medicine without improvement, the disease became more serious. On November 21, the family took the child to the District Medical Center for examination and treatment.

Despite the doctors’ efforts to save her, the girl died the same day. Suspecting that the patient had diphtheria, the Bao Lam District Medical Center reported to the Cao Bang Provincial Center for Disease Control and took throat swab samples to send to the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for testing.

On the afternoon of November 23, test results from the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology confirmed that patient Giang Mi Hu was positive for Corynebacterium diphtheriae - the agent that causes diphtheria.

The Director of Cao Bang Department of Health has urgently directed the Provincial Center for Disease Control to coordinate with Cao Bang Provincial General Hospital to directly monitor, direct and support Bao Lam District Medical Center in the prevention and control of diphtheria epidemic in the area.

In recent years, diphtheria has re-emerged in the Central Highlands and some northern mountainous provinces. These localities are often in remote areas where vaccination rates have decreased or been interrupted, leading to an increase in cases.

Recently, Ha Giang province, after nearly 20 years without a case, recorded more than 30 cases of diphtheria, including one death. Thai Nguyen province recorded 2 cases, while Dien Bien province recorded 3 cases, including 1 death.

According to the Law on Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases, diphtheria belongs to group B - dangerous infectious diseases that can spread rapidly and cause death.
