According to Mr. Pham Hong Thai, Director of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, the stone rat species photographed is the Truong Son stone rat, which is also the first time images of this species have been recorded. Previously, this species of stone rat had only been confirmed through specimens, and no individuals had been recorded living in the wild.
In 2005, scientists first discovered a strange species of rat in the Hin Nam No National Biodiversity Conservation Area (Laos) and named it the Laotian rock rat. They compared the morphological characteristics of this new species with ancient rodent fossils and concluded that the Laotian rock rat is the only living representative of the ancient Diatomyidae family that became extinct 11 million years ago.
The Truong Son rock rat is the sole remaining representative of a family of mammals that became extinct 11 million years ago.

By the end of 2011, while conducting a biodiversity survey of small mammals in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, scientists collected four specimens of a strange mouse species in Kim Phu commune, Quang Tri province (formerly Thuong Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, old Quang Binh province).
Through analysis, researchers determined that these specimens were of Laotian rock rats, and then named this species of rat in Vietnam the Truong Son rock rat.
