On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025), Lao leaders shared profound thoughts, not only expressing their respect for the Vietnamese revolutionary press but also emphasizing the essential role of the press in preserving and promoting the special Laos-Vietnam relationship as well as in facing the challenges of the digital age.
In an interview with a reporter from the Vietnam News Agency in Vientiane, Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane affirmed that the establishment of headquarters of Vietnamese press agencies in Laos is a vivid demonstration of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
The press is not only a means of transmitting information, but also an important bridge in spreading awareness of the history, value and strategic depth of the Laos-Vietnam relationship to the people of the two countries as well as the international community.
In the context of information explosion, especially on social media platforms, where a lot of false and distorted information can cause division and skepticism, the role of mainstream journalism becomes even more urgent.
Minister Thongsavanh emphasized that the Vietnamese press in Laos is doing well in its mission of providing accurate and timely information, contributing to strengthening trust and mutual understanding between the two peoples, while affirming the righteousness, purity and cooperation of the bilateral relationship.
From a theoretical and strategic perspective, Mr. Khamphanh Pheuyavong, Head of the Central Propaganda Department of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, delved into the historical role and new mission of revolutionary journalism in the digital age.
He affirmed that the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press has accompanied the nation through important turning points: from resistance war, national reunification to innovation and integration.
Today, journalism continues to be a pioneering force on the ideological and cultural front, facing unprecedented challenges brought about by digital technology, artificial intelligence and social networks.
The 4.0 industrial revolution has completely changed the communication method and information reception behavior of the public.
Instead of reading newspapers or watching traditional television, people now access information through smartphones, social networks and digital platforms.
Mr. Khamphanh also frankly pointed out that the rapid development of technology, although opening up many opportunities, also entails risks such as loss of control over content, challenges to journalistic ethics and the risk of spreading fake news. From there, he called on press agencies to not only quickly transform digitally in terms of technology, but also to comprehensively innovate from content, communication strategy to critical thinking.
Journalists need to be firmly equipped with political stance, adhere to professional ethics, and master technology to protect the truth, guide public opinion, and maintain social trust.
Two perspectives, one from the perspective of diplomatic practice and one from the depth of political theory, together paint a panoramic picture of the special role of the Vietnamese revolutionary press today: both a bridge of international friendship and a shock force protecting ideals, truth and trust in the digital age.
That mission becomes even more sacred when the press not only reflects reality, but also builds trust and leads public opinion towards the values of truth, goodness and beauty in a world that is constantly changing./.
