Viettel helps affirm Laos's telecommunications position in the region

Star Telecom (Unitel) - a joint venture between Viettel Group (Vietnam) and Lao Asia Telecom of the Lao Ministry of Defense, is recognized as the network operator with the best network infrastructure in Laos.

On the afternoon of September 26, in the capital Vientiane, a ceremony was held to announce the results of recognizing Star Telecom Company (Unitel) - a joint venture between Viettel Group (Vietnam) and Lao Asia Telecom of the Lao Ministry of Defense , as the network operator with the best network infrastructure in Laos.

The Speedtest Awards, presented by the prestigious international organization Ookla, are based on the analysis and evaluation of objective data from users' daily experiences and service testing. This is an important event, contributing to affirming the position of Lao telecommunications on the regional map.

According to Ookla, the Speedtest Connectivity Score results (factors measuring Internet connection performance) show that Unitel has achieved new standards, not only in infrastructure scale but also in speed and customer experience, approaching advanced markets in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Speedtest Awards are prestigious awards given to carriers with outstanding service quality, with scores calculated based on criteria such as access speed and experience.

Ms. Susila Johnston - representative of Ookla organization - emphasized: "We made the selection based on three key factors: image quality through video platforms, gaming experience and wide coverage across the territory. These are factors that affirm the strong development and potential to continue to break through of Lao telecommunications."

Mr. Soutchai Lorlonesy - Director General of the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Information and Communications of Laos, affirmed that this award is not only for a business, but also a common pride of the Lao telecommunications market, helping Lao people to access online services of the Party and State more quickly and conveniently, as well as e-commerce platforms. This is a key infrastructure in the digital transformation process, contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of Laos.

After 16 years of development, Unitel has continuously expanded its telecommunications infrastructure from 2G, 3G, 4G to 5G, with nearly 10,000 mobile base transceiver stations (BTS), covering 95% of the population and more than 43,000 km of fiber optic cable nationwide. These efforts have narrowed the digital gap between regions, while creating a foundation for digital services to develop and serve people's lives.

Mr. Phan Xuan Luong - Deputy General Director of Unitel Technology, said that in the coming time, Unitel will continue to invest in expanding the network to remote areas, contributing to narrowing the digital gap between regions in Laos. In addition, Unitel will also strengthen the implementation of solutions to protect the safety of users in cyberspace.

This award not only demonstrates Unitel's sustainable development but also contributes to enhancing the national position and affirming the important role of digital infrastructure in the regional and international integration process./.
