Apple's Board of Directors and senior executives are accelerating plans to find a successor to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Cook in preparation for the possibility that he will leave the position as early as next year, according to informed sources.
John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, is widely seen as Cook's most likely successor, although no final decision has been made, the sources said.
Mr. Ternus' appointment will put a leader from the hardware industry at the helm of Apple.
This move will be of particular significance in the context that Apple is struggling to find a direction for new product lines and is being left behind by rivals in Silicon Valley in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) race.
Mr. Cook has expressed his desire to have an internal candidate to replace him, and said the company has very detailed succession plans. It is likely that after the next profit report in late January 2016, Apple will announce a new CEO.
Sources say announcing the move early in the year would give the new leadership team time to settle in ahead of the company's key annual events, including its developer conference in June and the launch of new iPhones in September.
Mr. Cook, Apple's former chief operating officer, turned 65 this month. He has led the company since 2011, taking over the role from co-founder Steve Jobs.
Under Mr. Cook, the tech giant's market capitalization has skyrocketed from about $350 billion in 2011 to $4 trillion today.
Apple shares are currently trading near all-time highs following strong earnings last month, although its roughly 12% share price gain this year lags that of major tech rivals such as Alphabet, Nvidia and Microsoft./.
