Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made two noteworthy statements in an interview on Lex Fridman's podcast. He declared that the world has achieved AGI. At the same time, he changed his stance on the backlash against DLSS 5, admitting he understands why gamers are angry.
AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence. This concept refers to an AI system capable of performing all the intellectual tasks that humans can do. Unlike current AI, which is only proficient in specific areas such as translation, coding, or image recognition, AGI is expected to be able to reason, learn, and solve problems as flexibly as a normal person.
Regarding AGI, Huang was frank when asked about the timeline. "I think it's now. I think we've achieved AGI," he said.
However, Huang quickly clarified this statement. He cited the example of an AI system that could create a web application, attract billions of users for a small fee, and then quickly disappear. Even so, he acknowledged that the probability of AI independently running Nvidia is currently 0%. In other words, Huang's definition of AGI leans towards a short-term commercialization moment, rather than a sustainable capability to replace humans.
This statement is in line with a general trend among tech leaders. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once said that the company "has essentially built AGI." Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella argued that the tech industry is still far from reaching this milestone.
The remainder of the interview focused on DLSS 5, the AI-powered rendering technology that Nvidia just introduced at the GTC 2026 conference. Immediately after its launch, it faced backlash. Gamers criticized DLSS 5 for turning game visuals into "AI slop," a term referring to AI-generated content that looks artificial and uniform. Character images from the Resident Evil Requiem demo became the target of ridicule on social media.
Initially, Huang reacted strongly. At a press conference at GTC, he stated bluntly that the critics were "thinking wrongly." He asserted that DLSS 5 was not simply a post-processing filter; it was a technology for controlling generative processes at the geometric level.
On the Lex Fridman podcast, the Nvidia CEO switched to a more conciliatory tone. "I think their point is valid. I understand where they're coming from, because I myself don't like AI garbage," he shared.
However, Huang's core message remains unchanged. He emphasized that DLSS 5 respects the geometry created by the artists. Game developers have complete control over how the technology is used. DLSS 5 is expected to launch this fall with support from Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. Games.
