Sam Atman posted on X that while there is an announcement scheduled for the morning of May 13, it is “not GPT-5, not a search engine.” But whatever it is, Atman said it will “feel like magic.” The only details provided by OpenAI’s official post are that the launch will include updates to ChatGPT and its latest model, GPT-4.

News of OpenAI's plans to launch a search engine has been around for a while.

On May 6, The Verge reported that OpenAI was trying to recruit Google employees for a team working to ship a new product soon. Not stopping there, Bloomberg and The Information both reported that a search product was being developed by the company behind ChatGPT, although there was no set launch date.

OpenAI’s search product is an extension of its flagship ChatGPT, allowing ChatGPT to pull information directly from the web, including citations, Bloomberg reported. ChatGPT is a chatbot that uses OpenAI’s advanced AI models to generate human-like responses to text prompts.

Industry observers have long touted ChatGPT as an alternative to online data collection, although it struggles to provide accurate and real-time information from the web.

OpenAI has seen its ups and downs over the past year, including the board's inexplicable firing of Sam Altman in November 2023 before he was recruited by OpenAI investor Microsoft, paving the way for his return to the position just five days after his firing.
