Sam Atman posted on X that although there was an announcement scheduled by the company for the morning of May 13th, it was “not GPT-5, not a search engine.” But whatever it is, Atman said it would be “like magic.” The only details provided by OpenAI’s official post were that the launch would include updates to ChatGPT and its latest prototype, GPT-4.

Information about OpenAI's plans to launch a search engine has been circulating for some time.

On May 6th, The Verge reported that OpenAI is trying to recruit Google employees for a team working to launch a new product soon. Furthermore, Bloomberg and The Information both reported on a search product being developed by the company behind ChatGPT, although no fixed launch date was given.

Bloomberg reports that OpenAI's search product is an extension of the leading ChatGPT and allows ChatGPT to retrieve information directly from the web, including citations. ChatGPT is a chatbot that uses OpenAI's advanced AI models to generate human-like responses to text prompts.

Industry observers have long touted ChatGPT as an alternative to online data collection, although it struggles to provide accurate and real-time information from the web.

OpenAI has seen its ups and downs over the past year, including the inexplicable dismissal of Sam Altman by the board of directors in November 2023 before he was hired by OpenAI investor Microsoft, paving the way for his return to his position just five days after being fired.
