Just days after its release on Netflix, The Wonderfools became one of the most talked- about Korean films on social media and international forums.
The presence of two popular stars, Cha Eun Woo and Park Eun Bin, quickly garnered attention from the moment it was announced. The drama also marks the reunion between actress Park Eun Bin and director Yoo In Sik, who was behind the resounding success of *The Strange Lawyer Woo Young Woo* . This collaboration has further heightened audience expectations for the project.

Set in late 1999, a time when the world was gripped by fears of the "Y2K problem" and doomsday prophecies, The Wonderfools opens its story in the fictional city of Haeseong. At the heart of the film is a group of people considered outcasts who inadvertently become the last hope for saving the world.
The main character, Eun Chae Ni (played by Park Eun Bin), is a girl with a congenital heart condition who lives in constant fear of death. Along with Son Kyung Hoon and Kang Ro Bin, she plans a fake kidnapping to fund a round-the-world trip before it's too late. However, an unexpected incident causes all three to come into contact with chemical waste from a secret laboratory, granting them strange superpowers.
In their journey to learn how to control their new powers, they meet Lee Un Jeong (played by Cha Eun Woo) – a city hall civil servant with the ability to control objects with his mind. From here, the group becomes entangled in the secrets surrounding Project Wunderkinder, an experimental program aimed at creating superpowered humans and researching immortality.

Immediately after its release, The Wonderfools quickly achieved impressive results on Netflix. According to FlixPatrol statistics, the film entered the Top 10 in 28 countries and territories, including South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil. In its home country, the film climbed to number 1 on Netflix South Korea after only three days of release.
Netflix also reported that the series garnered approximately 2.7 million views in its first three days. On the platform's global non-English language programming chart, it rose to number 6, a rather impressive result for a brand new series.
One of the most discussed aspects was Cha Eun Woo's return after the scandal involving tens of billions of won in additional taxes. Prior to the film's release, many worried that the actor's personal image might negatively impact the project. However, director Yoo In Sik affirmed that the production team prioritized the quality of the work over cutting or editing Cha Eun Woo's scenes.
In fact, the actor was almost completely unaffected by the previous controversy. Not only did he maintain his screen time, but he also received much praise for his edgier, darker image compared to his previous roles.

Besides the main storyline, the villains are also considered a highlight of the film. Actress Jung Yi Seo attracted attention with her role as Seok Joo Ran, a character who possesses the ability to control others after secret experiments. The actress was praised for her restrained yet haunting performance through her eyes and expressions. Meanwhile, Bae Na Ra, as Kim Pal Ho, presented a cold-blooded villain, creating many tense confrontation scenes with Cha Eun Woo's character.
Instead of following the familiar superhero trope, The Wonderfools chooses to explore humor and chaos. Each character, whether supporting or villainous, has their own screen time, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Although the plot isn't overly predictable, the charming way the situations are constructed and the fast pace keep the film engaging throughout. For many viewers, it's a suitable entertainment choice after a stressful workday, while also offering a refreshing experience.
