The Guardian (UK) newspaper reported on May 11 that President Donald Trump officially nominated medical doctor Casey Means to hold the position of Surgeon General of the United States .

This position has great symbolic significance because it will be the spokesperson for public health, influencing health policies, programs, and decisions across the United States.

According to President Trump, Dr. Casey is courageous, visionary and "will be one of the best Surgeons General in American history."

Mr. Trump's new move came after he abruptly withdrew the nomination of Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, citing criticism of her medical qualifications.

Journey "against the health system"

Dr. Casey Means was born in 1987, graduated valedictorian with a degree in human biology and received his medical degree from Stanford University in 2014.

She was a physician at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland but left the profession in 2018 because she believed the health system "wasn't treating illness, it was feeding it."

She is also the co-founder of the health technology company Levels Health and the author of the book Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health (2024) - a "best-seller" that is considered a "revolutionary" handbook for personal health.

She is against mandatory vaccination of infants, and has criticized medical school curricula written by Big Pharma as "not real medicine", claiming that they manipulate and create diseases for profit.

Not only that, she once made a shocking statement about the medical industry: “From the time we are in our mother’s womb, the pharmaceutical industry turns us into lifelong customers. They don’t cure us, they make us dependent.”

Mixed reactions

President Trump's nomination immediately faced strong opposition from medical organizations and the media, with the main reason being that Ms. Casey would not have a license to practice medicine since 2024.

In addition, some medical experts have questioned Ms. Casey's professional competence and criticized her for promoting "anti-vaccine conspiracy theories."

On the other hand, female doctor supporters consider Casey Means a truth-teller , a “courageous voice in an era of commercialized medicine.”

In addition, her nomination is also seen as a testament to the influence of Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr in the administration, because just one day after nominating her, Mr. Trump told reporters that he "followed Bobby's (Mr. Robert F Kennedy Jr) recommendation".

However, according to Forbes magazine, Health Minister Robert still firmly defended the female doctor: "Casey is the perfect choice for the position of Surgeon General simply because she has left the traditional health system and is not dependent on it."
