“Golden Boy” of Chemistry Olympiad, contributing to the glory of the land of scholars

After many days of fighting in the international arena, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, the owner of the Gold Medal of the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO) held in Saudi Arabia, returned to his homeland in the joy, emotion and pride of his family, teachers, and many friends of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted. Hung's Gold Medal has contributed to glorifying the tradition of studiousness of the land of learning Bac Ninh-Kinh Bac. Once again, the intelligence and bravery of Bac Ninh students shine, reaching international level.

In the loving affection of family, teachers, friends, the young man with a bright face and a gentle smile Nguyen Huu Tien Hung emotionally shared: I thank the care and companionship of my family, school, teachers, friends, all of whom are a great source of encouragement for me throughout this arduous but extremely meaningful journey. I hope this will be a good start for me to continue pursuing my passion for chemistry and fulfill my childhood dream of becoming a doctor to treat and save people.

The medal marks the perseverance

With the excellent achievement of winning the Gold Medal at the 2004 International Chemistry Olympiad and being the contestant with the highest score in the Vietnamese delegation, contributing to the achievement of the national chemistry team to second place in the world , Nguyen Huu Tien Hung has written a beautiful story of youth about aspirations and success through perseverance.

The “golden boy” of the Chemistry Olympiad said: Since childhood, I have had a special passion for natural sciences and dreamed of growing up to become a good doctor to cure people. But to get the results today, my journey to chemistry is a long story.

Hung said: In grades 6 and 7, I tried hard to study English well to participate in the provincial excellent student exam at the end of the year. From grade 8, I dreamed of becoming a doctor, so I changed my direction to study biology well. In grade 9, thanks to the encouragement of my sister, who was then a chemistry student at Bac Ninh Specialized High School, I started to join the Chemistry team. And in that same school year, I won first prize in the Bac Ninh province's excellent student exam in Chemistry and was directly admitted to grade 10 specializing in Chemistry at Bac Ninh Specialized High School.

And at Bac Ninh Specialized School - a place with good quality of education, a highly competitive learning environment, and a team of teachers who always inspire and develop the special talents of students, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung has had more opportunities to explore and learn about interesting things about chemistry.

“I am very passionate about Chemistry because this subject allows me to experience the appeal of chemical reactions that create colorful colors, precipitation, evaporation, etc. When studying this subject, I can easily explain things and phenomena, research the composition, structure, properties and changes of matter. It is very close to everyone's life. In particular, this is a subject with many applications in life, the backbone of industry,” Hung shared.

For Hung, chemistry is like any other subject, so to study well, you need to understand the root of the problem, grasp the basic knowledge, and from there solve difficult problems. And this learning method was applied by Hung at the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad. Hung said: When I first received the exam, I was a bit confused because the exam had many new points, requiring candidates to have the ability to think comprehensively and perform operational skills accurately. However, remembering the instructions of the teachers to solve problems from basic knowledge, with the motto of doing easy things first, difficult things later, doing things firmly as much as possible, so after the exam, I always felt comfortable and achieved good results.

By diligently building up his knowledge and diligently competing in intellectual playgrounds, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung has achieved an impressive record. From First Prize in the Bac Ninh Province Chemistry Competition for Excellent Students in Grade 9; Second Prize in the National Chemistry Competition for Excellent High School Students, Gold Medal at the Asian Chemistry Olympiad in Grade 11 to First Prize in the National Chemistry Competition for Excellent High School Students in Grade 12, this is the premise for Tien Hung to have the opportunity to be listed on the international gold medal list at the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad.

Motivation to continue to break through and reach far

Accompanying and closely following Hung in domestic and international competitions, witnessing the outstanding growth of students, Ms. Vu Thi Len, Hung's homeroom teacher, shared: At Bac Ninh Specialized High School, teachers discover each student's strengths and weaknesses so that they can come up with appropriate educational methods to maximize their abilities. As for Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, as soon as he entered grade 10, he showed his comprehensive qualities and Hung has a special love and passion for Chemistry. He arranges his daily schedule very scientifically, such as time for physical exercise, self-study of subjects and especially Chemistry, which helps Hung always achieve the best results in the class. In addition, the province's excellent incentive mechanism and policies also create great motivation for Hung and his friends to strive to excel.

With his outstanding achievements, last June, the Party Cell of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted held a ceremony to admit outstanding student Nguyen Huu Tien Hung to the Party. Honored to be in the Party, Tien Hung shared: Becoming a Party member before entering university is a special mark for me. I feel like I am more mature and responsible in every thought and action. In the near future, I will study at Hanoi Medical University to continue my dream of becoming a good doctor, treating and saving people.

Following his son's every step, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hoa, the parent of Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, could not hide his emotions: When watching the live broadcast of the award ceremony, the moment his son was named and won the most prestigious Gold Medal of the competition, the whole family burst into emotion. It was a worthy reward for his efforts, but it was also Hung's reward for the hard work of the teachers and the province's investment in key education.

In the past three years, the Education and Training sector of Bac Ninh has made strong changes, affirming its leading position in the quality of teaching and learning. Before Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, at regional and international Olympic competitions, Bac Ninh had 3 students winning Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals, 6 Bronze Medals in the Olympic competitions of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, etc.

At the national high school excellent student selection exam for the 2023-2024 school year, Bac Ninh had 79/86 students winning prizes, reaching a rate of 91.9% of the total number of contestants winning prizes, ranking 2nd nationwide. Three students from Bac Ninh province were selected to the National Olympic Team to compete in regional and international competitions and joy followed joy when they all achieved good results. They were Nguyen Cong Vinh, who won the Bronze Medal at the 2024 European Physics Olympiad. Nguyen Van Hoang won the Bronze Medal at the 2024 International Math Olympiad. And the "Golden Boy" Nguyen Huu Tien Hung as mentioned above.

Like the “Phu Dong strength”, the outstanding domestic and international achievements in key education in Bac Ninh have contributed to lighting up the faith and hope for generations of students in the Kinh Bac learning land in their journey to the future, continuing the tradition of academic achievements.
