Established on December 20, 1962, in the Duong Minh Chau war zone ( Tay Ninh province), with its predecessor being the Southern Liberation Army's Performing Arts Troupe, the unit went through the most brutal years of the resistance war against the US.
From works like "The Sound of the Pestle in Bom Bo Village" to heroic anthems like "Spring in the War Zone" and "Spring in Ho Chi Minh City," artist-soldiers used songs and music as weapons, accompanying the army and the people until the day the country was unified.
Building on that tradition, in the current period, the Military Arts Troupe of Military Region 7 still maintains the unique identity of the "Heroic and arduous Eastern Region," while constantly renewing itself to meet the demands of the mission in the new situation.
The troupe's significant transformation is closely linked to the role of the new leadership, especially Lieutenant Colonel, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Xuan Hung - a talented dancer and choreographer, and a dedicated troupe leader. Since taking office in 2021, he and the leadership team have vigorously developed and implemented the "Project for Building and Developing the Military Arts Troupe of Military Region 7 in the period 2021-2025".
The core objective of the Project is to rejuvenate the workforce and enhance professionalism. Impressive figures have proven this direction correct: The performing arts team is aged 21-30, accounting for a high percentage (singers: 72%, dancers: 76%, female vocalists: 100%). Self-reliance has been significantly improved: The troupe has independently handled everything from scriptwriting and directing to musical arrangement and orchestration for large-scale programs.
Not content with just performing for internal audiences, the troupe has ventured into professional national-level art arenas and achieved remarkable success. At the 2021 National Professional Music, Dance, and Performing Arts Festival (Phase 2), the troupe's artistic program "Motherland of the Eastern Region" won the overall gold medal. Meritorious Artist Nguyen Xuan Hung also received an outstanding gold medal for his role as General Director.
In addition, young artists from the troupe such as Truong Thuy Duong, Xuan Huong, Xuan Dung, The Hung, Thuan Ha… have become prominent names, winning the hearts of audiences in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces.
Each year, the troupe performs more than 100 shows, from modern stages in the heart of the city to remote outposts, border areas, and islands. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the image of these artist-soldiers bravely supporting frontline forces left a strong impression, demonstrating the spirit of "selfless dedication to the people."
In particular, the unit has also successfully fulfilled its role as a "cultural ambassador" in defense diplomacy activities with neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Laos, and international friends such as Cuba, contributing to spreading the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers to the world .
Sharing his vision for the future, Lieutenant Colonel and Meritorious Artist Nguyen Xuan Hung emphasized the continued development of the unit towards a "regular, elite, and modern" approach. The troupe is aiming to digitize its performances, develop a professional YouTube channel, and propose investing in a national-level sound and lighting system.
Under the leadership of the Party Committee and the Command of Military Region 7, the collective of officers and artists of the troupe are constantly striving to build the unit into a model art theater of the Army in the south, keeping the flame of enthusiasm burning on the cultural front, and cultivating the values of truth, goodness, and beauty for the soldiers and the people.
