Students are changing the way they learn thanks to AI (Illustration created by AI).
In just a few years, typical AI (artificial intelligence) tools like Chat GPT have become deeply ingrained in Indian classrooms, especially among younger users. With AI capable of summarizing material, explaining concepts, and suggesting solutions almost instantly, many students are choosing to learn through quick comprehension and application, rather than rote memorization.
The most noticeable change is the decline in rote learning in subjects that rely heavily on memorization, such as history and geography. Students spend less time copying notes or memorizing definitions. Instead, AI explains knowledge in an easy-to-understand way, with examples, helping them grasp the concepts faster. However, this also raises concerns about the ability to retain information effectively if one becomes overly reliant on AI.
AI shortens the time spent on lengthy, traditional homework assignments.
According to a survey of over 6,090 students in Delhi by the Centre for Policy and Governance Research in India, nearly half of respondents rely on AI for research and writing. Asking AI for help when encountering difficulties is becoming increasingly common, leading to a decline in the habit of struggling with assignments on their own before seeking assistance.
Reading and writing styles are also trending towards change. Instead of reading long documents and writing from scratch, many students are using AI to create drafts and summaries quickly, and then editing them.
A global study conducted by a German university also noted that learners primarily use AI for research and writing tasks rather than for exam preparation.
Beyond education, AI is also impacting future decisions. A report by Leap Scholar shows that approximately 75% of Indian students use GPT chat to research study abroad options and programs, instead of relying solely on rankings or guidebooks.
In summary, the most significant change is in learning methods, shifting from rote memorization and lengthy assignments to learning through comprehension, quick research, and time optimization. AI is seen as a supporting tool, but its effectiveness depends on learners' ability to verify information and develop critical thinking skills.
