Hipopo Papa Cafe (formerly Mumin Papa), once known as one of the most popular dating spots on the Hayashizaki Matsue Coast, has remained popular ever since the installation of the “special aquarium” in the women’s restroom, making it even more popular not only with Japanese tourists but also with many foreign tourists. In fact, Hipopo Papa may be the only place in the world with an aquarium toilet.
Structurally, the toilet is surrounded on three sides by a giant aquarium containing hundreds of exotic fish and a male turtle.
Although this is a women's restroom, the staff at Hipopo Papa are willing to share it with male customers when the restaurant is not too crowded.
Designing an aquarium toilet may seem like a good idea to attract customers, but it’s not without its drawbacks. According to Setouchi Finder, some regulars have spent more time in the toilet just admiring the view, while others are reluctant to use it because they’re afraid of the feeling of so many sea creatures staring at them while they “unload their troubles.”
Although the aquarium toilet at Hipopo Papa has been around for over 12 years, it is still one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Akashi area. The owner said that he spent about $250,000 to create this masterpiece, aiming to bring a relaxing feeling like swimming in the ocean.
