Huge costs for the 2024 US election

The 2024 US election is said to be the most expensive election in history, with total contributions reaching 15.9 billion USD, according to AFP.


APF today, November 6, cited data from the non-profit organization OpenSecrets, saying that spending for the 2024 US election, with the official voting day taking place on November 5 (US time), will surpass the $15.1 billion spent on the 2020 US election and double the $6.5 billion spent in 2016.

In the heated presidential race, US Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the fundraising leader. Her campaign has directly raised more than $1 billion, 40% of which came from small donors, plus $586 million in donations from political action committees.

Michael Bloomberg is the top donor to the Democratic Party, contributing about $93 million. Investor George Soros has given $56 million to the Democratic Party through his political action committee.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump's campaign raised $382 million directly, of which 28% came from small donors, and affiliated committees contributed $694 million.

The biggest donor is Timothy Mellon, the reclusive 82-year-old banking heir, who has contributed $197 million to Mr. Trump and Republican causes.

Other major Republican supporters include packaging industry insider Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, casino magnate Miriam Adelson, billionaire Elon Musk, and hedge fund investor Kenneth Griffin, each of whom has contributed more than $100 million to Mr. Trump and Republican causes.

In total, $10.5 billion has been spent on campaign ads in races ranging from presidential to local officials, according to data released by ad tracking firm AdImpact.

The presidential campaigns of Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump spent a combined $2.6 billion on ads between March and November 1. The Democrats spent $1.6 billion, while the Republicans spent $993 million.

Topics highlighted in Ms. Harris’s ads include taxes, abortion rights, the economy , and health care. Mr. Trump’s ads mainly focus on immigration, inflation, crime, taxes, and the economy.

Pennsylvania leads the battleground states in spending for the presidential election with $264 million, followed by Michigan with $151 million and Georgia with $137 million.

Overall, Pennsylvania has seen a staggering $1.2 billion in spending across all races in the 2024 US election, according to AFP.
