After nearly 5 years since the start of restoration and embellishment, Kien Trung Palace relic inside Hue Imperial City is gradually completing the main items and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
Kien Trung Palace is a particularly important structure in the architectural system of the Nguyen Dynasty's palaces. The palace was built from 1921 to 1923 under the reign of King Khai Dinh. In 1932, King Bao Dai had the interior of the palace renovated and installed Western amenities, but the exterior remained the same. After the success of the August Revolution, on August 29, 1945, Kien Trung Palace became a witness to the event where King Bao Dai had his first contact with the Provisional Government Delegation to officially discuss his abdication. By 1947, the building was destroyed by war, leaving only the foundation. Many items of the temple are gradually being restored.The patterns on the temple are elaborately crafted. According to experts, in addition to its historical values, Kien Trung Palace also has great architectural and artistic values, having all the characteristics of an Indochinese-style building with a combination of Asia and Europe, including French architecture, Italian Renaissance architecture mixed with traditional Vietnamese architecture. The construction unit is working hard to complete the final items on the most unique palace in Hue Imperial City. In mid-February 2019, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center and the Central Institute of Construction Science and Technology organized the groundbreaking ceremony for the restoration and embellishment of Kien Trung Palace. The project was carried out on an area of over 3,800 square meters. The construction units kept the existing foundation structure intact, limiting intervention in the original elements of the relic. The project includes items of reinforcement, restoration of the surrounding wall, railing system, courtyard including front and back gardens, steps; restoration of Kien Trung Tower (Kien Trung Lau) 2 floors, about 14 meters high, construction area of about 975 square meters. In addition, the project also restored small surrounding works such as brick pedestals, fountains, cannons, guardhouses, green tree systems, preservation of the foundation of Dong Cung Lau, Ngu Thu Phong, Vo Ho Gia Phong and Ngu Phe Phong... The exterior of Kien Trung Palace is uniquely decorated. The project has a total investment of more than 123 billion VND from the capital of the cultural development target program and other legally mobilized sources. According to the assessment of historical researchers, the renovation, restoration and embellishment of Kien Trung Palace relic is extremely necessary and has great significance in restoring the value of Hue royal architectural heritage. After completing the restoration, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center will display artifacts and organize an art exhibition space inside Kien Trung Palace to serve tourists. After nearly 5 years of implementation, the main items of Kien Trung Palace are gradually being completed. The decorative details of patterns, motifs, and animals on the palace bear the identity of the Hue royal court.
