Hanoi Although exhausted, Lieutenant Nguyen Thanh Tung tried to carry a 60-year-old woman who was suffocating from smoke from the 4th floor away from the fire, while his teammates carried an 8-year-old boy out.
At around 5:20 a.m. on November 30, a fire broke out on the third floor of a 5-story, 30-square-meter house on Yen Lang Street, Dong Da District. At the time of the fire, a 60-year-old woman and her 8-year-old grandson were sleeping on the fourth floor.
Upon receiving the news, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Team (Dong Da District Police), located more than 2 km from the fire, quickly dispatched two fire trucks and officers and soldiers to the scene.
The house that caught fire was located right on the main road, the two lower floors were rented as offices, the third floor where the fire broke out contained some old flammable items such as wooden tables and chairs. At that time, the fire broke out on the third floor, shooting out the windows, while two people were trapped on the fourth floor.
Lieutenant Nguyen Thanh Tung and three soldiers went straight into the house to search for the victims. Discovering the grandmother and grandchild lying motionless on the bed, Lieutenant Tung quickly put oxygen masks on both of them.
In the thick, toxic black smoke, Tung was tasked with carrying the old lady down. The narrow staircase, only about 60 cm wide, was slippery, making it difficult to move. His legs were wobbly from exhaustion, but he still tried to carry the old lady to the waiting ambulance.

At the same time, Corporal Dang Dinh Binh Phuoc rescued the 8-year-old victim. With one hand, he opened the boy's mouth to help him get oxygen, while the other hand continuously stroked his body. "At that time, I was really worried, afraid that the victim could not survive," Phuoc said, adding that he had only been a soldier for 20 months.
Commenting on the fire, the team leader, Lieutenant Colonel Thinh Vu Khanh, said that the survival of the grandmother and grandchild was a miracle. "Luckily, the road was clear at the time of the fire and the information reported by the base was very accurate. If it had been a few minutes later, the victim might not have survived," Lieutenant Colonel Khanh shared.
The two victims are currently being treated at Bach Mai Hospital and their health has gradually stabilized. The cause of the fire is being clarified.
