Doctors are performing a liver transplant on a patient.
These are two cases hospitalized in critical condition, with poor prognosis, their lives completely dependent on liver transplants during the "golden time", marking a major step forward in organ transplant techniques - especially emergency liver transplants, one of the most complex surgical techniques today.
The first patient is Mr. D.PL (21 years old, 2nd year student), diagnosed with hepatitis - cirrhosis of unknown cause with severe progression in a short period of time.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with end-stage liver failure, severe coagulopathy, hemorrhage, generalized edema, multi-compartmental effusion, complete collapse of the right lung, and hepatic coma - a condition with a high mortality prognosis.
The patient was obese (weighing 108kg), requiring a large enough donated liver, while time did not allow waiting for a liver source from a brain-dead donor.
Thanks to the patient's relatives volunteering to donate their liver, the hospital performed surgery just 3 days after receiving the patient.
According to the doctors, although the surgery faced many risks, under the solid expertise of the team and the close direction of the Board of Directors, the surgery was completed after many hours and used up to 12 liters of blood and blood products (because the patient had a blood clotting disorder).
After the transplant, the patient overcame complications of multidrug-resistant pneumonia and made a miraculous recovery. Currently, the patient is eating, walking, and living normally, with stable liver and respiratory functions, preparing to be discharged from the hospital and will soon return to school.

The second patient, Mr. TMH (51 years old, living in Nha Trang ward), was hospitalized in a state of severe acute liver failure, grade IV hepatic coma, requiring a ventilator, with a life expectancy of only a few days if he did not receive an emergency liver transplant. His younger brother, a soldier on active duty, volunteered to donate part of his liver.
After 24 hours of admission, the hospital completed all preparations and performed the surgery overnight. After more than 8 hours of surgery, with the coordination of nearly 100 medical staff from many specialties, the transplant was successful. The patient was fully conscious, recovering well, and was ready to be discharged; the liver donor was in stable health and had returned to normal activities.
According to Major General Tran Quoc Viet, Director of Military Hospital 175 , the two emergency liver transplants were performed in the context of the hospital officially implementing liver transplant techniques from December 2024, after more than a year of actively preparing human resources, material resources, practical training and technology transfer from Military Central Hospital 108.
After 7 months of implementation, the hospital has successfully performed 8 liver transplants, including 2 emergency transplants. "With the orientation of becoming the leading military-civilian organ transplant center in the Southern region, Military Hospital 175 is now able to perform liver transplants for all adults with end-stage liver disease, in both active and emergency transplant programs," Major General Tran Quoc Viet informed.
Major General Tran Quoc Viet also said that the success of the two consecutive emergency liver transplants was not only the result of professional efforts but also demonstrated the bravery and fighting spirit of the military medical team for the lives of patients.
