Scams impersonating tax authorities are on the rise.

According to the General Department of Taxation, the number and severity of scams conducted via text messages, websites, and apps impersonating tax authorities are increasing.

The General Department of Taxation ( Ministry of Finance ) continues to issue warnings to the business community and taxpayers about advertisements on social media platforms offering online services, including domain names and apps, set up by malicious actors to scam people into authorizing tax payments.

The agency stated that some individuals have been impersonating tax officials, calling people and instructing them to access the link "gdtgov.cfd" to download a fake app impersonating the General Department of Taxation in order to update their Citizen Identity Card information in their business registration files. In some cases, these individuals have impersonated tax authorities to demand payment of personal income tax.

To avoid being scammed, the General Department of Taxation warns businesses and individuals not to accept paid packages labeled "Tax Law Documents". In case of suspicion, taxpayers should contact the relevant departments and tax offices in their area for assistance via the phone numbers listed on the websites of the departments with the Vietnamese national domain ".vn".

In the event of receiving unusual or potentially fraudulent messages on social media platforms or phone calls, taxpayers should retain evidence such as messages, phone numbers, or call recordings.

Taxpayers can also provide existing evidence to relevant units of the Police and Tax authorities, requesting them to consider and handle the violations committed by the individuals involved according to regulations. All tax-related information is publicly available on the website (gdt.gov.vn).

Recently, local authorities have repeatedly issued warnings about online scams. The Vinh Phuc Tax Department has recorded instances in the Lap Thach area where individuals are directing taxpayers to download unofficial software via links to check their tax obligations.

The Ha Tinh Provincial Police's online portal also cited the case of a company director in the area who was directed to access the link "dvcgov.lol" and then installed the application on his phone to claim tax exemptions for his business. As a result, he was defrauded of nearly 100 million VND by the scammers who gained access to his phone and copied his bank account access details, passwords, and OTP codes.

In April, the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department also warned people to be wary of individuals impersonating tax officials and instructing users to install applications in order to steal money.
