Selection of new rice variety DL221 (Dat Viet)

The hybridization and selection solution of the new rice variety DL221 (Dat Viet - Ma Lam) by the group of authors (Tran Thi Vu Phuong, Nguyen Duc Thien, Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhien) of Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center, which has just won second prize at the 10th Binh Thuan Provincial Technical Innovation Contest in 2022 - 2023, has contributed to creating an improved rice gene source to meet production needs in many places in the province, increasing income for growers.

Currently, some rice varieties previously hybridized by Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center are widely grown in our province, the South Central Coast region has contributed to solving the problem of food security, adapting to natural conditions, and having a short growing period. However, due to harsh weather conditions, farming regimes, and the relatively long survival time of old rice varieties, some rice varieties currently in production have degenerated, reduced productivity, increased investment costs, and low efficiency. Hybridizing new rice varieties to meet the needs of growers is necessary.

The new rice variety DL221 solution by the group of authors from Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center won second prize at the 10th Binh Thuan Province Technical Innovation Contest in 2022 - 2023.

Agricultural engineers of the Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center (Center) including Tran Thi Vu Phuong, Nguyen Duc Thien, and Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhien have learned from the experience of the center's predecessor leading experts, inheriting the starting material source of the unit that has successfully selectively bred the new rice variety DL221 (Dat Viet - Ma Lam). "According to agricultural experts, the time from research to bringing a new rice variety to the market takes 5 - 10 years with a lot of production costs. People doing this job must be truly dedicated, passionate, and not discouraged. Their new rice variety solution DL221 won second prize in the 10th Technical Innovation Contest in 2022 - 2023, which is completely worthy and is being applied to agricultural production of people in the province", Mr. Luong Thanh Son, Chairman of the Provincial Union of Science and Technology Associations shared at the award ceremony for the authors and groups of authors who won the prize at the recent closing ceremony.

The center's report on the new rice variety DL221 stated that in the future, the new rice variety DL221 will contribute to bringing great economic efficiency in increasing the average rice yield of the province, the coastal provinces of the South Central Coast, the Central Highlands, and increasing the income of farmers. The ability to widely apply the DL221 rice variety is not only in our province but also in the above areas. DL221 will also add to the national rice variety structure, gradually replacing degraded and diseased rice varieties. On the basis of the newly created rice variety, it will contribute significantly to ensuring food security, economic and social stability in Binh Thuan in particular and the South Central region in general.

The new rice variety DL221 has harmonized high-quality rice varieties, long-grain white rice and medium-quality varieties, short growing period; can be grown 3 crops a year, resistant to brown planthoppers, average yield 7 - 7.5 tons/ha. The rice grains are easy to process into other products such as cakes, vermicelli in restaurants and eateries in our province, increasing income for farmers. The Center hopes to cooperate with cooperatives and businesses to invest in large-scale planting to bring this rice product with high nutritional value to a large number of consumers in the near future.
