The solution for breeding and selecting the new rice variety DL221 (Dat Viet - Ma Lam) by the team of authors (Tran Thi Vu Phuong, Nguyen Duc Thien, Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhien) from the Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center recently won second prize at the 10th Binh Thuan Provincial Technical Innovation Competition in 2022-2023. This has contributed to creating an improved rice gene pool to meet production needs in many areas of the province and increase income for farmers.
Currently, several rice varieties previously developed by the Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center are widely grown in our province and the South Central coastal region, contributing to food security, adapting to natural conditions, and having a short growing season. However, due to harsh weather conditions, farming practices, and the relatively long lifespan of the old rice varieties, some of the currently cultivated varieties have degenerated, resulting in reduced yields, increased investment costs, and low efficiency. Developing new rice varieties to meet the needs of farmers is therefore essential.
Agricultural engineers from the Binh Thuan Agricultural Seed Center (the center), including Tran Thi Vu Phuong, Nguyen Duc Thien, and Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhien, learned from the experience of leading experts and their predecessors, inheriting the unit's initial materials to successfully breed and select the new rice variety DL221 (Dat Viet - Ma Lam). “According to agricultural experts, the time from research to bringing a new rice variety to market takes 5-10 years with significant production costs. Those doing this work must be truly dedicated, passionate, and not discouraged. Their solution, the new rice variety DL221, won second prize in the 10th Technical Innovation Competition in 2022-2023, which is entirely deserved and is currently being applied in agricultural production by people in the province,” shared Mr. Luong Thanh Son, Chairman of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Binh Thuan province, at the award ceremony for the winning authors and groups of authors at the recent closing ceremony.
The center's report on the new rice variety DL221 clearly states that in the future, the new DL221 rice variety will contribute significantly to economic efficiency by increasing the average rice yield of the province, the South Central coastal region, and the Central Highlands, increasing income for farmers. The potential for widespread application of the DL221 rice variety extends beyond our province to other regions. DL221 will also supplement the national rice variety structure, gradually replacing degraded and disease-prone varieties. Based on the creation of this new rice variety, it will make a significant contribution to ensuring food security and stabilizing the economy and society in Binh Thuan in particular and the South Central region in general.
The new rice variety DL221 harmonizes the characteristics of high-quality, long-grain white rice with medium-quality varieties, short growing season; it can be grown three times a year, is resistant to brown planthopper, and has an average yield of 7-7.5 tons/ha. The rice grains are easily processed into other products such as cakes and vermicelli in restaurants and eateries in our province, increasing income for farmers. The Center hopes to cooperate with cooperatives and businesses to invest in large-scale cultivation so that this highly nutritious rice product can reach a wider range of consumers in the future.
