To help students and their families understand the connection between subject choices and their abilities, strengths, career aspirations, and future university admission requirements, many high schools in Hanoi have proactively organized counseling sessions, meetings, and guidance for parents and students ahead of the 2026-2027 school year. Through this activity, students are supported in building a suitable learning path, creating a solid foundation for choosing a profession and developing themselves in the future.
A stable learning path is needed.
Immediately after the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the exam results and admission cutoff scores for grade 10 in the 2026-2027 school year, many public high schools organized meetings with parents and newly admitted students to provide information about the school's educational program, guide them in choosing subject combinations, and answer questions before the start of the new school year.
For the 2026-2027 school year, Doan Ket High School - Hai Ba Trung (Bach Mai Ward) will enroll 675 students in grade 10. With 15 classes, the school organizes 5 subject combinations, divided into two main blocks: Natural Sciences and Social Sciences, creating opportunities for students to choose subjects based on their abilities, strengths, and future career aspirations from the beginning of their high school education. This is also a scientific approach to ensure students have a stable learning path throughout their three years of high school.
According to teacher Le Viet Duong, Principal of Doan Ket High School - Hai Ba Trung District, choosing the right subjects plays a crucial role in building and stabilizing students' learning paths. When students study subjects that match their abilities, strengths, and career aspirations, they not only maximize their potential but also maintain their interest in learning and improve their knowledge acquisition. At the same time, choosing the right subjects from the beginning helps students proactively prepare for university admissions, creating a favorable foundation for choosing a major and developing their future careers.
“The school always hopes that parents and students will determine their academic direction early on to best prepare for the new school year. However, the selection of subjects and subject combinations will not be imposed or rigid. Before the school year begins, students will still receive advice, support, and maximum assistance from the school to make choices that best suit their abilities, interests, and future aspirations,” shared teacher Le Viet Duong.
Ms. Pham Anh Thu, a parent whose child was admitted to Doan Ket High School - Hai Ba Trung for the 2026-2027 school year, said that she only learned about the counseling session after her child was admitted to choose subjects instead of having to study all subjects as before. Furthermore, the subjects chosen and the subject combinations directly relate to the university entrance exam and future career choices for her child. “My child and I will discuss this thoroughly, taking a longer-term view of the future to choose subjects for my child, prioritizing their abilities and interests,” Ms. Anh Thu shared.
Mr. Tran Manh Cuong's family (Vinh Tuy ward) sat down together, listened to their child's wishes, and got a general idea of the subjects they would choose. "Besides the elective subjects, my child and I are very interested in foreign language training through the IELTS or HSK Chinese language programs offered by the school," Mr. Cuong said.

Orientation for the future
As one of the public schools with high admission scores in the city, for the 2026-2027 school year, Phan Dinh Phung High School (Ba Dinh ward, Hanoi) has a first-choice admission score of 25.75 points, equivalent to approximately 8.58 points per subject.
For the 2026-2027 school year, the school will enroll 16 classes of 10th graders with diverse models: 5 international joint classes and 11 regular classes. At the meeting, parents and students had the opportunity to directly discuss with the school's management board and homeroom teachers about the learning roadmap and how to choose subject combinations according to the 2018 General Education Program. The school consistently emphasized the importance of proactively choosing subject combinations that match students' abilities, helping them build confidence and prepare for the next three years of schooling.
According to teacher Le Ngoc Hoa, Principal of Phan Dinh Phung High School, with the vision of building Phan Dinh Phung High School into a top school in the education system of Hanoi and the whole country, the school places special emphasis on educating students to develop comprehensively in knowledge and skills. In particular, advising and guiding 10th-grade students in choosing and deciding on elective subjects is a top priority for the school's Board of Directors.
“The school bases its subject combinations on many factors. Besides suitability to the school's conditions and staff, the most important thing is to prioritize the students' best interests, including the connection between the subject combinations and the university entrance exam blocks they will choose later. We both develop and advise parents and students on selecting combinations so that students have the opportunity to take exams in multiple university blocks, meaning more doors for their future. This is especially important, and we always focus on this when advising students,” shared teacher Le Ngoc Hoa.
Schools are also focusing on building subject combinations that ensure balance in education, avoiding situations where students only choose subjects that require rote memorization for ease of learning while neglecting natural sciences, which can limit job opportunities and go against future social development trends. Therefore, schools are researching and developing combinations that include both natural and social science subjects, and then collaborating with parents to advise and guide students.
According to the 2018 General Education Program, in addition to compulsory subjects, 10th-grade students can choose a combination of subjects developed by the school. The eight compulsory subjects are: Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; History; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Local Education; and Experiential Activities and Career Guidance. Besides the compulsory subjects, students can choose four out of nine subjects: Geography; Economics and Law Education; Physics; Chemistry; Biology; Technology; Informatics; Music; and Fine Arts. Choosing a combination of subjects is crucial because it forms the basis for students to develop their abilities and strengths, and also creates a foundation for choosing university admission combinations and future careers. If the chosen subjects do not match their abilities or interests, students may face difficulties in their studies and may even have to change their career path.
According to the plan, from 1:30 PM on June 25th to midnight on June 27th, students admitted to 10th grade at high schools in Hanoi must complete the enrollment confirmation procedure. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training notes that students who do not confirm their enrollment within the specified time will be considered as not wishing to attend the school they have been admitted to and will not be considered for supplementary admission.
Students admitted to public non-specialized and specialized high schools can choose to confirm their enrollment online or in person. For online confirmation, students log into the city's enrollment portal at https://tsdaucap.hanoi.gov.vn to complete the enrollment process. Alternatively, students can also go directly to the high school they have been admitted to in person to complete the procedure as instructed by the school.
