Today (December 5), opposition Democratic Party chairman Lee Jae-myung said he initially thought the declaration of martial law late on December 3 was a deepfake technique, a method using artificial intelligence to fake faces and voices for fraudulent purposes.
Speaking to CNN, Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, recounted that while relaxing at home after work on the night of December 3rd, his wife unexpectedly showed him a video clip on YouTube.
"She said, 'The President (Yoon Suk Yeol) is declaring martial law,'" Lee recalled.
"I replied, 'That's just a deepfake scam. It must be a deepfake. It can't possibly be real,'" the opposition party leader told his wife.

"However, when I watched the video, the president was indeed declaring martial law, but I still thought it was just a hoax," said Lee.
Lee was Yoon's main rival in the 2022 presidential election and faced numerous legal troubles himself.

Within an hour of President Yoon Suk Yeol's televised announcement, Lee quickly left his home and headed straight to the National Assembly building in Seoul. At the same time, he sent messages to members of the Democratic Party on their Telegram group, urging them to come to the National Assembly as quickly as possible.
Their goal was to immediately pass a resolution to lift the recently imposed martial law.
However, upon arrival, Lee witnessed his party's lawmakers being blocked outside while soldiers began to block the entrance to the main building, and military helicopters circled overhead.
Therefore, he decided to climb over the fence and live-stream the entire process on his phone. The video clip he shared has now received tens of millions of views on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Ultimately, a total of 180 MPs, mostly from the opposition but also including many from the ruling People Power party, successfully entered parliament.
They passed a motion forcing President Yoon to lift martial law.
President Yoon has not appeared in public in the past 24 hours.
