South Korean opposition party leader thinks martial law declaration is 'deepfake' scam

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/12/2024

Today (December 5), Chairman of the Democratic Opposition Party Lee Jae-myung said he initially thought the declaration of martial law late on December 3 was a deepfake trick, a technique that uses artificial intelligence to fake faces and voices for the purpose of fraud.

Sharing with CNN, Mr. Lee Jae-myung, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, said that while he was resting after work at home on the night of December 3, his wife suddenly showed him a video clip on YouTube.

“She said, ‘The President (Yoon Suk Yeol) is declaring martial law,’” Mr. Lee recalled.

"I replied, 'It's just a deepfake. It has to be a deepfake. It can't be true,'" the opposition party leader replied to his wife.

What happens if the South Korean president is impeached?

"But when I watched the video, the president confirmed that he was declaring martial law, but I still thought it was a scam," said Mr. Lee.

Mr. Lee is Mr. Yoon's main rival in the 2022 presidential election and he himself faces many legal troubles.

Within an hour of President Yoon Suk-yeol's televised announcement, Mr. Lee quickly left his home and headed straight to the National Assembly building in Seoul. At the same time, he sent messages to members of the Democratic Party on Telegram, urging them to come to the National Assembly as soon as possible.

Their aim was to immediately pass a resolution to lift the martial law that had just been declared.

However, upon arriving, Mr Lee saw his party's lawmakers blocked outside as soldiers began blocking the entrance to the main building, while military helicopters circled overhead.

So he decided to climb the fence to get inside and live-stream the entire process using his phone. The video clip he shared has now received tens of millions of views on social network X (formerly known as Twitter).

In the end, a total of 180 MPs, mostly from the opposition but also many MPs from the ruling People Power party, successfully entered parliament.

They passed a motion forcing President Yoon to lift martial law.

President Yoon has not appeared in public in the past 24 hours.
