With the desire to preserve, promote, and spread the sustainable values of traditional medicine, on April 11th, the Vietnam Institute of Traditional Medicine, in collaboration with the Institute of Military and Civilian Medical Training and Research, held the opening ceremony for the specialized training program and apprenticeship for traditional medicine practitioners, course K01, 2025.
The training program is implemented in accordance with Circular 02/2024/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health , which regulates the issuance of certificates for traditional medicine practitioners, certificates for those with traditional family remedies, certificates for those with traditional family healing methods, and the integration of traditional and modern medicine at medical examination and treatment facilities. The training aims to meet the professional development needs of doctors, traditional medicine practitioners, and pharmacists in enhancing their expertise in traditional medicine and pharmacy, while simultaneously ensuring the quality of community healthcare.
The course offers 10 specialized modules, including in-depth content on treatment methods, diagnosis, and the application of herbal medicine in traditional medicine; and aims to train traditional medicine practitioners and pharmacists to meet current professional standards. Upon completion of the program, individuals will be eligible to participate in the professional competency assessment exam organized by the National Medical Council in collaboration with the Vietnam Traditional Medicine Association . Passing the exam will result in the awarding of a certificate as a traditional medicine practitioner.

| Associate Professor, Dr. Dau Xuan Canh, President of the Vietnam Traditional Medicine Association, shared this at the opening ceremony. |
Associate Professor, Dr. Dau Xuan Canh, President of the Vietnam Traditional Medicine Association, stated that the training program not only equips students with in-depth professional knowledge of traditional medicine but also cultivates medical ethics, skills, principles, and standardized practical abilities. This is an important first step for each student to become a bridge between national heritage and modern medicine, contributing to comprehensive and sustainable community health care.
According to the Vietnam Traditional Medicine Association, training activities have been suspended for the past 21 years pending new guidelines from the Ministry of Health. During this time, many people who wanted to pursue a career as a traditional medicine practitioner did not know where to start or how to receive proper, in-depth training.
Across the country, there are currently over 25,000 people who need training to obtain a traditional medicine practitioner certificate.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dau Xuan Canh believes that while the training and certification of traditional medicine practitioners and doctors has been well-implemented, the training and apprenticeship for those wishing to practice traditional medicine has not been adequately carried out. Therefore, in the future, the Association will strengthen training in the direction of apprenticeship.
