The World Health Organization has designated August 13th as World Organ Donation Day. Following the government's directive and in recognition of these compassionate acts, the Ministry of Health has decided to designate May 20th as "Vietnam Organ and Tissue Donation Day" to honor organ and tissue donors and their families who choose to donate their loved ones' organs and tissues to save the lives of other patients, thereby fostering a spirit of sharing.

At the program, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra stated that organ and tissue donation is not only a medical act but also the noblest humanitarian act, reflecting the humane philosophy of "Giving is forever"; expressing deep gratitude to those who have donated organs and tissues, and noting that, in the most painful moments, they have overcome their loss to think about the lives of others. According to the Deputy Prime Minister: "It is a silent but invaluable sacrifice, the most beautiful expression of compassion and humanity."

Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister frankly pointed out that the need for organ transplants in Vietnam remains very high, while the supply of donated organs is limited. Currently, thousands of patients are still waiting every day for organ transplants to sustain their lives. This reminds everyone that each application to donate tissues and organs today could become a ray of hope for many people tomorrow.

To promote the organ and tissue donation movement throughout society, the Deputy Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Health to continue urgently advising on and perfecting mechanisms, policies, and laws; proposing continued investment to improve organ transplantation capacity; and building a modern coordination system that effectively applies science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation.

At the event, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra personally registered to donate tissues and organs and called on officials, soldiers, youth union members, organizations, businesses, and every family and citizen of Vietnam to join hands in strongly spreading the movement of tissue and organ donation with compassionate hearts, sharing, and sacred national and fraternal love.

Minister Dao Hong Lan stated that by 2025, the whole country had performed 10,878 organ transplants. To date, there have been 286 cases of brain-dead organ donation nationwide. Currently, there are 34 hospitals licensed to perform organ transplants. The number of people voluntarily registering to donate tissues and organs after death is increasing, with 177,454 people having registered to donate tissues and organs to date. However, the current supply of organs still does not meet the growing demand for organ transplants from patients.
At the event, the Ministry of Health expressed gratitude to the families of organ and tissue donors and held a ceremony to launch a campaign encouraging people to register to donate organs and tissues for the sake of patients' lives.
