CNN: Trump sends Iran a revised peace proposal.

(HTV) - According to the New York Times and Axios, US President Donald Trump has just sent Iran a revised peace proposal with tougher terms after a meeting at the White House, which could prolong the negotiation process by about a week.

CNN quoted US officials as saying that the revised demands focus on Iran's nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to internal sources cited by Axios, Trump is demanding detailed regulations on how and when the U.S. will take over Iran's enriched uranium stockpile. He also wants to tighten the terms regarding the release of Tehran's frozen assets.

A White House official affirmed that the U.S. would only sign the agreement if it was guaranteed that Iran would never possess nuclear weapons.

US officials believe the new proposal aims to pressure Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to approve the agreement sooner. However, significant disagreements remain between the two sides. Iran has previously stated that the release of its assets is a mandatory condition. They have also insisted that they will not discuss the details of their nuclear program within the framework of the current negotiations.

On the Iranian side, chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf declared that his country obtained concessions through missiles, not through dialogue. He accused the other side of using economic and media pressure to sow internal discord.

On the ground, maritime tensions continue. The US military just fired missiles to intercept a commercial vessel attempting to bypass a blockade. Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had granted permission and escorted 28 ships safely through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian military has warned it will attack any military vessel that deliberately interferes in the area. Tehran requires ships to seek permission and imposes transit fees of up to $2 million per trip.

The US and Iran's joint blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has left vast quantities of oil, gas, and fertilizer stranded, exacerbating pressure on global supply chains. US President Donald Trump has yet to make a decision on a ceasefire or reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the protracted negotiation process, a U.S. official told CNN that the likelihood of resuming airstrikes was very low. The network also quoted a foreign official as saying that U.S. allies in the region opposed the continuation of the military campaign and hoped that both sides would reach a mutual agreement soon.
