The Protocol on Inspection, Plant Quarantine and Food Safety for Frozen Durian Exports Between Vietnam and China opens up many opportunities for Dak Nong.
The Protocol allows the export of frozen durian varieties such as: whole durian, pureed durian and durian pulp.
According to data from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), in 2023, Vietnam exported about 500,000 tons of durian, with a turnover of 2.3 billion USD. Of which, the Chinese market accounted for more than 80%.

It is forecasted that in 2024, frozen durian exports could reach a turnover of 400-500 million USD. Durian is likely to become one of Vietnam's billion-dollar agricultural products by 2025.
With a durian area of nearly 10,300 hectares and an estimated output of about 41,400 tons/year, Dak Nong has the opportunity to expand its export market to China.
Director of Nghiep Xuan Lau Kieu Van Import-Export Trading Company Limited, Gia Nghia City said: "Official export to China will help businesses easily access the market and increase the value of local frozen durian."

According to Ms. Van, frozen durian brings many benefits compared to exporting fresh fruit. Enterprises no longer have to worry about short preservation time but can supply products to the market all year round.
This is especially important, because the Chinese market has a very high demand for durian but also requires guaranteed product quality.
In addition, exporting frozen durian helps reduce transportation costs because the pulp only accounts for about 30%, while the shell is removed. This helps businesses save costs and increase the value of the product.
Challenges and competitive pressures
Despite the opportunities, the frozen durian export industry also faces many challenges. Competition from countries such as Thailand and Malaysia is a major pressure.

Therefore, Dak Nong durian exporting enterprises need to strictly comply with regulations on quality and food safety to ensure that products can enter the Chinese market.
The Plant Protection Department is currently asking localities to review and compile codes for growing areas and frozen durian packaging facilities. At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of ensuring food hygiene and safety.
According to Mr. Vu Dinh Chien, representative of Yen Nhi Trading and Service Company Limited, investing in freezing technology and cold storage is very necessary. To meet export requirements, the company has built a factory system with nearly 2,000m2 and standard cold storages.

The company currently has 4 warehouses and 3 freezers, with a storage capacity of nearly 140 tons. Each month, the unit exports more than 100 tons of frozen durian to China. The company currently has nearly 200 hectares of durian with a growing area code and an export packaging code from China.
“Quality control from cultivation to production is the decisive factor for products to be able to enter a demanding market like China today,” Mr. Chien shared.
In addition, improving technology level is also a big challenge. The number of frozen durian production enterprises in Dak Nong is increasing.
However, it is still necessary to invest more in research and development of frozen durian processing technology to meet the high quality requirements of the international market.

The signing of the protocol on exporting frozen durian to China opens a new era for the Dak Nong durian industry. This is the time for businesses to seize opportunities, invest in technology and improve product quality.
